Everton could be facing a summer of immense change at Goodison Park, with plenty of uncertainty hovering over Merseyside.

The Toffees' financial issues have been well documented and Kevin Thelwell has admitted that Sean Dyche's side may have to sell some of their best players when the transfer window opens to balance the books.

While both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Amadou Onana have been linked with potential moves, few players have been the subject of as much speculation than young defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The 21-year-old is reportedly a target for Manchester United heading into the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting they view the Toffees gem as a potential replacement for Raphael Varane in the future [Manchester Evening News, 29 April].

While United are yet to act upon their interest, they could now be preparing a push to bring Branthwaite to Manchester after a new update emerged over Varane's future with the Red Devils.

In an official statement on the Manchester United website on Tuesday (14 May) the Red Devils confirmed that the French international would leave Old Trafford as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Will Manchester United push for Everton and Jarrad Branthwaite transfer this summer? With confirmation emerging that the former Real Madrid man will be a free agent come the end of the Premier League campaign, United will be eager to secure a replacement as soon as possible so they are not short of options.

With Varane's wages off of the books, funds could well have been freed up to pay the fee required to drag Branthwaite out of Goodison Park and it wouldn't be a surprise to see a bid arrive at Goodison sooner rather than later.

Whether or not the Toffees are in a financial position to reject such an offer remains to be seen, but Dyche will be hoping that Everton will somehow find a way to keep the 21-year-old on Merseyside.

If the Blues do lose their defensive gem, it could be a massive blow to Dyche's hopes heading into next season, but it could also give the Toffees boss some money to spend this summer.
