And the Portuguese international reaffirmed his commitment to United amid the speculation he could leave.

Speaking to Sky Sports after their 3-2 win over Newcastle, he said: "I will be here until I said the club needs to want me, I feel the club wants me to be a part of the future.

"As I said always, I don't want to be a player that the club doesn't want to have. If for some reason they don't want to have me I will go but if they want me, I will stay."

He then light-heartedly pulled his captain away, with the reporter quickly handing over the Player of the Match award to Fernandes.

The 29-year-old joined the rest of his United teammates as Ten Hag delivered a message to the fans at Old Trafford in their final home game of the season.

"On behalf of the players, staff and myself I want to thank you all for the brilliant support during this season. As you know it wasn't an easy season, but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team.

Fernandes' heat map against Newcastle proves why he's so crucial to United "This season is not over yet. First we go to Brighton where we travel for three points and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you those players will give everything to get that cup [The FA Cup] and bring it to Old Trafford.

"We are sure you will be there supporting us. Thank you, you are the best supporters in the world."

Fans praise Sir Alex Ferguson for 'one of the best calls ever' as his bold Aston Villa claim at the start of the season resurfaces United's victory over Newcastle has provided a huge boost ahead of the final but European qualification hangs in the balance.

They sit eighth and level with the Magpies on 57 points, although the latter are above them thanks to their far superior goal difference.

Chelsea are currently sixth in the single Europa Conference League spot and need just one point to qualify for Europe, with the Blues also boasting a better goal difference.

Should United finish seventh on the final day then they will miss out on continental football, unless they beat City in the FA Cup final as that will see them qualify for the Europa League.

Second-half goals from Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund were enough to seal the three points despite a late consolation goal from Lewis Hall.
