Goals from youngsters Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund helped Manchester United to edge past Newcastle despite second-half strikes from Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall.

The home side's victory on the night means that both teams are now level on points going into the final game of the season.

With a superior goal difference of 24, a victory against Brentford on Sunday would secure a Europa Conference League spot for the Magpies.

The Red Devils would need to better Newcastle's' result in West London if they want to enter Europe next season through the league standings. However, the option of a victory in the FA Cup Final remains a viable option for European Qualification in 2025.

Story of the Match Erik Ten Hag made just one change to his United team that lost to Arsenal at home last weekend. Club captain Bruno Fernandes returned in midfield as Rasmus Hojlund moved to the bench.

Eddie Howe also made just the single change from his Newcastle side that drew at home to Brighton on Saturday. Kieran Tripper returned to the starting lineup for the first time since the beginning of March, thus meaning that Tino Livramento had to be shifted to the bench.

Despite a quiet opening ten minutes, the first chance fell to United as a result of a set piece when Fernandes chipped the ball into the box, eventually finding Casemiro. The veteran Brazilian then attempted an acrobatic overhead kick, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.

The home side continued to push on as the next big chance midway through the first half also fell the way of the Red Devils. Alejandro Garnacho was played in down the left flank by Fernandes as the Argentine youngster found himself one versus one with Martin Dubravka but shot straight at the Slovakian keeper from a tight angle.

Soon after, the breakthrough eventually came as homegrown Kobbie Mainoo scored his fourth of the season to give his side the lead. An Amad Diallo cross from the right flank somehow found its way to the English youngster who was unmarked on the penalty spot before he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner.

Newcastle were quick to respond as Sean Longstaff received the ball on the right side of the box before fizzing a square ball across the face of goal. However, no run had been made and thus no one was there to tap it in for the visitors.

Just minutes later the Magpies thought they had the equaliser when Jacob Murphy's cross from the right was met by Dan Burn at the back post and headed towards goal. Fortunately for the home fans, Casemiro was patrolling the goal line as he managed to clear it to safety and preserve Man United's lead.

Newcastle had one more chance to level the score before halftime as a Tripper corner was crossed in towards an unmarked Bruno Guimaraes. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Brazilian midfielder headed just wide of the post.

They did eventually get the equaliser as just three minutes into the second half, Alexander Isak played in Murphy down the right with the resulting cross being whipped in towards the back post. Having stayed onside, Anthony Gordon slipped in on the blindside of the defence and calmly finished from close range.

Within ten minutes of conceding, the home side quickly restored their lead through a wonder strike from Diallo. A Fernandes corner was headed clear but fell to the Ivorian on the edge of the box, he then struck his shot sweetly on the half volley with his left foot as the ball cannoned into the far corner of the net.

Andre Onana was then called into a double save to keep his side in front when Joelinton played a through ball into Longstaff who found himself one-on-one but shot straight at the Cameroonian keeper. Shortly after, a cross from the right flank was met by Joelinton inside the box, but his powerful header was denied by the United shot-stopper once again.

Newcastle kept piling on the pressure as a poor clearance from Onana found Gordon who skipped past Casemiro before firing across the face of goal where substitute Miguel Almiron was inches away from poking it into the net.

Just moments after coming on, out of form striker Hojlund doubled Man United's lead with some superb footwork on the edge of the box. The Danish international skipped past Burn before shooting back across goal with his right foot, through the legs of Lewis Hall and into the bottom corner.

Newcastle weren't going to throw in the towel though when an Emil Krafth corner in the 92nd minute was headed clear but dropped to the feet of Hall on the edge of the box. Unmarked and in space, Hall took a touch to set himself before curling a left-footed shot into the top corner from 25 yards out.

The Red Devils managed to hold on for the remainder of added time as both Manchester United and Newcastle remain in the running for a European place finish on the final day of the season.

The Ivorian scored his first-ever Premier League goal for Manchester United as well getting an assist for the opener. He was a constant threat down the right-hand side and along with his captain Fernandes, he was the side's most creative output.
