Erik ten Hag has praised Sofyan Amrabat after he played a key role in Manchester United's 3-2 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

The Moroccan international had struggled for much of his Old Trafford loan spell but produced impressive performances in back-to-back home matches against Arsenal and Newcastle over the past few days. Amrabat made a number of vital defensive contributions to the midweek win, including a superb recovery tackle as he denied Alexander Isak what looked like a certain goal in the second-half.

Amrabat is still expected to leave United at the end of the season, with the club unlikely to trigger their option to make his loan deal from Fiorentina permanent for EUR25 million if they wish.

Asked what the victory meant to him, the United manager added: "It is a victory but I was pleased with the performance of the team. It is always difficult to play against Newcastle, they are v physical but also we played good football, scored good goals, especially the first, a nice team goal."
