Newcastle United were defeated 3-2 at Old Trafford but there was one hugely controversial VAR moment.

Anthony Gordon has slammed VAR after he was denied a penalty following a foul by Sofyan Amrabat in the 35th minute. Gordon was sent through on goal but caught on the ankle by Amrabat's studs as he attempted to have a shot.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, a visibly frustrated Gordon admitted he was shocked that a penalty wasn't given once looked at by the technology: "I have watched it back and it is a clear penalty." Gordon said. "I don't mind the referee getting it wrong on the pitch, but I don't understand the point of VAR. He [Sofyan Amrabat] goes down my Achilles and pushes me in the back.

"I knew straight away, that is why I didn't appeal. I waited for the VAR to check, I told my team-mates 'it was a clear penalty'. I don't understand the point of it, either get rid of it or get better - it's that simple."

Eddie Howe concurred with his winger after the game, saying: "I thought it was a penalty. You have to see it one to three times to see where the contact is. I thought that's what VAR was good at."

In response to that, the Premier League said: "Clubs are entitled to put forward proposals at Shareholders' meetings and we acknowledge the concerns and issues around the use of VAR.

"However, the League fully supports the use of VAR and remains committed, alongside PGMOL, to make continued improvements to the system for the benefit of the game and fans."
