What Raphael Varane did after his team-mates left the pitch at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening speaks volumes about the Manchester United defender.

United beat Newcastle 3-2 in their final home game of the season to keep their hopes of qualifying for next term's Europa Conference League alive.

Goals from Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund capped off an improved performance from Erik ten Hag's side, who will look to take confidence into their final game of the season against Brighton and the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The game also represented a farewell for a number of players who are out of contract this summer, with Varane and Anthony Martial set to depart Old Trafford on a free transfer next month.

Varane was not named in the squad as he is currently recovering from injury, but was still at Old Trafford in order to say his goodbyes to the home faithful after full-time.

And once the United faithful and players had left the building, Varane stayed behind - and sat in the centre circle at Old Trafford for one final time to soak it all in.

Earlier in the evening, the France international had taken a photo of United's Stretford End, mirroring the one he took after signing for the club from Real Madrid three years ago.

After his departure was announced earlier this week, an emotional Varane said in a video message to supporters: "To supporters of Manchester United - it's been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt.

"The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Manchester United player was insane. The atmosphere was insane. I fell in love with the club, with the fans.

"You have to play for Manchester United to understand what that represents.

"For my kids, it's home here. It's going to be a special place for me, for life.

"I'm very positive for the future - the owners are coming in with a clear plan, a strategy."
