Bruno Fernandes issued an ultimatum to Manchester United over his future as Bayern Munich emerged as one of the clubs he could join in a blockbuster summer transfer

Thomas Tuchel wants Bayern Munich to try and sign Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United if he is going to perform a U-turn and commit his future to the German club.

Tuchel announced back in February that he would be stepping down as Bayern head coach at the end of the season after pressure had grown on the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss. Since then, Bayern have been working around the clock to try and find a successor.

Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick are among those that have been linked with the vacancy, but Bayern have struggled to find the perfect replacement. That has triggered rumours that Tuchel could decide to stay and continue his role ahead of the new season.

However, Tuchel is keen for Bayern to give him assurances on two specific transfers before committing to signing a new contract, according to The Independent. One is a position he wanted to strengthen right at the start of the season, which is a new midfielder as Joao Palhinha came close to signing.

Another role he feels has grown in importance is an attacking midfielder. United captain Fernandes is one of the players he would like, having previously tried to sign the Portuguese playmaker on several occasions, including while Tuchel was in charge of Chelsea in 2021.

Bayern want to evolve the personality of their squad while adding more quality and depth in front, making Fernandes a perfect option. The importance for Tuchel to get Fernandes on board may even escalate depending on Jamal Musiala, who has been linked with a move to Manchester City.

"The club needs to want me," said Fernandes. "I feel the club wants me to be a part of the future. As I said always, I don't want to be a player that the club doesn't want to have. If for some reason they don't want to have me, I will go. But if they want me, I will stay.

"I am no different from anyone just because I have the armband. I always try my best and we always do the best we can for the club - nobody hides that we play for a big club and we have to lift our standards every game."

Fernandes has two years left on his current deal at Old Trafford.
