Thomas Tuchel will leave Bayern Munich after talks collapse amid Man Utd speculation

The former Chelsea manager made a shock announcement in February that he would stand down come the end of the current campaign after just 18 months in charge.

Bayern have been in talks with a string of potential replacements, including the likes of Ralf Rangnick, but have been rejected by a long list of candidates.

Despite presiding over a first trophyless campaign in 12 years, Bayern chiefs began the process of trying to convince Tuchel to remain in charge earlier this week, but talks have broken down and he will now depart as planned.

'This is my last press conference at Sabener Strasse. There were talks, but we didn't reach an agreement, so the decision of February still stands,' confirmed Tuchel, speaking ahead of tomorrow's game against Hoffenheim.

'The job requires full energy, but it also gives me a lot of energy. It is my great passion. For me, a good training session is the basis for an excellent day.

'There are few better, more fun places than a football dressing room. A trophyless season with Bayern is never satisfactory, no one will disagree with that - including myself.

The Champions League season was almost perfect until the 87th minute in Madrid. Losing there in the last seven minutes can happen. You can accept that without having to be ashamed. We are very self-critical. We will never run away from responsibility. We have the right to walk out of this 15 month period with our heads held high.

Tuchel is understood to be keen on a return to the Premier League where he enjoyed a successful period in charge of Chelsea, famously leading them to a Champions League triumph three yeas ago.

A return to Stamford Bridge is looking increasingly unlikely, however, given the improvement the Blues have shown recently under Mauricio Pochettino.

'This is a tricky road where you lead me. I'd rather not answer,' Tuchel told TNT Sports before the game when asked about a possible return to the Premier League.

'But it is no secret that I loved it at Chelsea, I loved it in England, and I loved it in the Premier League for sure. It was a very, very special time in England, and I remember it very well.'
