Newcastle were then swept aside in a 3-2 Red Devils victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday. That was only the third time United had won in their last 12 Premier League matches.

A sweeping, almost season-long injury crisis has not helped, but Ten Hag has struggled to oversee a consistent run of form. Despite that, there reportedly remain key club figures who are fighting for INEOS to keep the former Ajax tactician.

Ten Hag's future will likely depend on the quality of managers available this summer. Aside from Thomas Tuchel, a dearth of elite coaches free on the market looks set to frustrate clubs who are looking to make changes in their respective dugouts.

It is claimed that the 'politics' of a potential United move for England boss Gareth Southgate make that appointment unlikely. The announcement of that potential scenario would be extremely sensitive, with neither the Football Association nor United wanting to derail England's chances at Euro 2024.

Southgate is believed to be a top candidate in the eyes of Ratcliffe. But the 52-year-old will lead the Three Lions into this summer's tournament in Germany, with the final set to take place on July 14. That is a little over four weeks before the start of the 2024-25 Premier League season.

United have also been linked with the former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter. However, no serious approach is reported to have been made for a manager who remains out of work since his exit from Stamford Bridge 15 months ago.

Ten Hag could therefore be given another season to prove he is the man to take United forward. A busy summer transfer window is expected as the Red Devils prepare for a major improvement next term.
