However, Football.London claim that Sessegnon has already been informed that the option will not be taken up and he will become a free agent at the end of next month. He will not be joining Spurs on their post-season friendly trip to Australia, after playing only two matches under Ange Postecoglou due to injury.

Sessegnon had been seen as an extremely bright prospect at Fulham, when Spurs won a tough race against a host of Premier League and European top clubs for his signature. One of those interested was United, with Solskjaer reportedly very keen on the teenager at the time.

Sky Sports claimed that United made initial contact with Fulham over the prospect of signing Sessegnon and were the only team to be in direct contact with the club, amid interest from Spurs and Juventus.

Solskjaer wanted to bring in young, homegrown players to supplement his talented squad, but one of the division's most sought-after talents turned down the Red Devils in order to remain in London, joining Spurs for PS25m.

But he made just 57 appearances in the five years since sealing that transfer and had surgery on both of his legs in February, following continued issues with his hamstrings that reduced his ability to stay fit under Postecoglou.

But with Shaw and Malacia both already at the club, a low-cost alternative at left-back such as Sessegnon could make more sense, should he be fully fit to return for the 2024/25 season.

United already looked to Spurs for left-back help in 2023, turning to out-of-favour Sergio Reguilon before his loan was ended in January.

At his peak, Sessegnon has proven to be an extremely bright talent and at 24 still holds so much untapped potential, which could be unlocked at Old Trafford five years after Solskjaer initially attempted to bring him to Manchester.
