Black Lions Rashford and Sterling suffer Euro axe
Source:Voice Online

MANCHESTER UNITED forward Marcus Rashford and Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling unlikely to represent England at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer after being omitted from Gareth Southgate's 30-man provisional squad, writes Vlad Andrejevic.

Both players have struggled for consistency in the league this season at their respective clubs, however they have long been key figures when they have represented their country. Rashford's omission comes as more of a surprise as he has been involved in seven England games this season, whereas Sterling's last cap came in the 2022 World Cup against France.

Southgate has relied on both players during his tenure, especially at big tournaments. Sterling, who has 82 caps to his name, has been involved in every major tournament for England since the 2014 World Cup, with his best performances coming at the last Euros in 2020.

Sterling registered three goals and one assist as England reached the final, notably scoring their only two goals in the group stages before earning the man of the match award as England knocked out Germany at a major competition for the first time in 55 years.

With Marcus I just feel other players in that area have had better seasons. It's as simple as that

England manager Gareth Southgate He remained a constant under Gareth Southgate until the conclusion of the World Cup two years later, since when he has fallen down the pecking order. His move to Chelsea the following summer has not done the 29-year-old any favours as his form has fluctuated in line with his club's turbulent transition.

The 26-year-old forward had also been an ever-present since his debut in 2016, earning 60 caps in all, markedly scoring three goals at England's last major tournament. The England manager had stuck with the forward throughout the qualifying campaign as well as giving him game time as recently as March, however due to the form of other players, he had to make "difficult calls.

"With Marcus I just feel other players in that area have had better seasons. It's as simple as that," Southgate said at the press conference following the squad announcement. He went on to highlight Sterling's importance in his time with England despite not being included this time round. "Raheem as well was crucial in the last Euros, especially for getting the goals in big games."
