England Euro 2024 squad announcement recap: Marcus Rashford is axed
Source:Dailymail

Published: 10:50 BST, 21 May 2024 | Updated: 16:06 BST, 21 May 2024

Gareth Southgate's squad announcements for major tournaments are usually fairly predictable, but the same can be not said about today.

Some huge names missed out on England's 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2024, such as Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford.

However, while some players' hopes were trampled on, others came true.

There are five uncapped players in the squad, and they are Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Adam Wharton, and James Trafford.

There are no guarantees all of them will make the final 26, but as Southgate said, everybody has a shot.

It feels like a new era for England under Southgate, and now we just have to wait and see how it plays out.

Right, I have to shoot off now, but as always, thank you for joining us here at Mail Sport.

Have a lovely afternoon, goodbye!

imageimageIt really is remarkable, isn't it?

Jordan Henderson was a stalwart in every England squad under Gareth Southgate, you just always expected him to be on the list.

So it came as a surprise to many when the news broke this morning that he had been left out of the squad for Euro 2024.

His footballing career in the last year has taken a major nose dive, and at Mail Sport, we took a deeper dive into what has gone wrong.

imageimageimageMichael Owen 'surprised' at Rashford omissionMichael Owen seems to have a different view from many of you in the comments.

The former Liverpool and England star is surprised that Marcus Rashford has been left out of the squad.

He cites the different style of player Rashford is to the other wingers that have been included, and I understand where he is coming from with that.

However, the form book tells the story, I'm afraid.

imageimageWho should be cut from the 33-man squad? There have already been some big names excluded, but there could be seven more...

Today was just the start of England's Euro 2024 squad selecting progress, they still have to cut it down to 26.

It must be brutal having the job to get rid of players, but at the same time, it's what you have to do to be a success in the sport.

So, which seven members will be cut from the final squad?

We want to hear your take...

imageimageimageTransitional period for the Three Lions It feels like the dawn of a new age for the England national team.

In club football, great teams keep evolving so that they can achieve continued success.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United are a great example of just that, and so too, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

That's now happening internationally with England, Gareth Southgate has decided to go out with the old and in with the new.

Should that mean England's expectations are lower for the tournament, though?

Yes, they have some of the World's best in Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden, but transitional periods are not always successful straight away.

It will be interesting to see how the squad plays together...

Gareth Southgate made some big moves today that many were not expecting, just look at the players he left out.

imageimageimageMore fan reaction...Harry, Bromley: How did Grealish and Shaw make the squad one has been out since Feb, and the other had a poor seasonAnonymous: So glad Eze is in. The guy is on fire atm. He with Bellingham would be so exciting.Fred, Surrey: Southgate gets some terribly unfair criticism for sticking with the old guard, but he has always acted swiftly in cutting them when there's a better alternative. Sterling, Deli Alli, Marcus Rashford, Henderson. Maguire is in because there aren't decent enough alternatives.imageimageWhat would your starting XI be for England's Euro opener?Right, we know the provisional squad, so it's only fair we try and pick an 11, right?

I think the goalkeeper is pretty much nailed down, I'd be stunned if Jordan Pickford did not take his place between the sticks against Serbia on June 16.

Harry Kane is probably the other nailed-down spot, but what about the other nine positions?

Tell me your starting XI in the comments, or via X (formerly Twitter).

imageimageEngland friendly's scheduleIt's starting to all feel real now that the squad announcement has been made, the excitement is building.

Before England's Euro 2024 gets underway on June 16 against Serbia, let's take a look at their pre-tournament friendlies:

England vs Bosnia-Herzegovina - 3 June, 19:45 at St James' ParkEngland vs Iceland - 7 June, 19:45 at WembleyHow many players from the squad will get a runout?

imageimageFan reactions to squad announcement...Anonymous: As a Newcastle fan, Kieran Trippier shouldn't be going, he's not in form at the moment, Tino Livramento is in better form right now.Albert, Ireland: Eric Dier must feel a bit hard done by.Anonymous: No Sancho? Thought he might have got in as looking good again at Dortmund. Far better than Eze.Anonymous: Grealish is lucky to have made this squad. Always takes too many touches while going nowhere and produces little end result of either useful crosses or goals. He seems more intent on winning free kicks, but England are devoid of anyone who can shape a free kick at goal.imageimageAn XI of who missed out There are some big players who didn't get the call for the provisional squad. Some are more surprising than others, may I add.

We thought we'd have a little fun and try and piece together a starting XI of players who didn't make the cut.

Want to see what we put together? Of course, you do.

Goalkeeper: Nick Pope Defenders: Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Levi Colwill, Ben Chilwell Midfielders: Jordan Henderson, James Ward-Prowse Attackers: Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford Striker: Callum Wilson

The formation is 4-2-3-1...

It's a hard one to answer, in truth.

You wouldn't say the midfield department is stacked, there are supposedly only six in the squad of 33.

However, that doesn't include Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, or James Maddison who are down as forwards, for some reason...

Even so, it will be interesting to see what happens if Rice does pick up an injury during Euro 2024.

Who will he turn to for the defensive midfielder role? Adam Wharton, or Kobbie Mainoo, I'm assuming.

Gareth Southgate spoke about prioritising calls with the players who didn't make the cut, and I'm sure his call with Rashford was a tough one.

Rashford has been a staple in England squads since his breakthrough in 2016, however, not anymore.

Nevertheless, via Instagram, Rashford has posted a story 'Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best' for this summer.

It must be hard, but that's a lovely response to it.

imageimageimageSouthgate selection key quotesGareth Southgate had a lot to talk about in a short space of time there, there is a lot to unpick.

So, here are the key quotes from his press conference:

Some very interesting points there from the England manager, we will be bringing you all the reaction, right here.

Firstly, though, what are your thoughts now you have seen the whole squad?

The job here is to adapt to the hand of cards you're dealt with. The injuries are a very complex thing. Sometimes players have had to play more than they might have done. Some players have come back earlier than they might have done. There's definitely been a lot of matches in the calendar. But it's too easy to say it's just the [fault of a] winter World Cup. It's lots of different reasons.imageimage'I'd be an idiot I'd say no (we can't win it)'Gareth Southgate, England manager on sharing the goals:

Not just Harry (Kane), but Raheem (Sterling)was crucial in the last Euros, especially for getting goals in big games. We have shared that load a lot more, you can see on the forward line the goals they have got for their clubs. You need those options. On if this squad is good enough to win the competition:

Everybody is waiting for that headline, I'd be an idiot I'd say no. If I say yes, there is a lot of work in front of us.imageimage'Some players not for this summer, but the future'Gareth Southgate, England manager:

Let's see what he has to say about the decisions.

I'm sure he will talk about Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson.

One question: What if Declan Rice gets injured?imageimageBreaking:England ANNOUNCE 33-man provisional Euro 2024 squadHere we are then!

England have officially announced their pre-Euro 2024 training squad, and it's long...

Gareth Southgate has called up 33 players for the friendlies in the build-up to the tournament.

Juts look at the amount of forwards!

imageimageMore fan opinions on Rashford...Mickey, London: I am ok with this. Rashford is not a bench player. He does not come on and change a game. He is better when he starts. He will not be in the starting 11 so worth the risk. My only concern is if we get injuries but think the squad is big enough to cope.Lewis, Manchester: Right decision on Rashford and Henderson.Anonymous: Embarrassing that Rashford has been scapegoated but Grealish goesimageimage10 minutes to go!Is anybody else getting as excited as I am?

We are just 10 minutes away from learning the pre-Euro 2024 training squad.

I wonder if there will be any late surprises, the amount we have already learned today has shocked many.

imageimageFan opinions on Rashford omission...Anonymous: Rashford has been out of form for most of the season, watching him as a neutral playing for United just seemed that he'd lost his motivation. Along with Henderson it's a good call for once by Southgate.Anonymous: I'm glad Rashford isn't picked. I think he's been blind to his poor performances all season, hopefully now he realises he's not an automatic pick for anything. With the likes of Foden, Bellingham and Palmer having good seasons, maybe we would be best opting for a more creative front line than one with pace which is really all Rashford brings to the table at the moment.Alan, Dublin: Yes! I'm a United fan and he deserves to be axed.....appalling body language, awful attitude, no effort, no teamwork, no end product.....I can keep going if u want.Seems like most people are on the same page...

It feels like it's never-ending, and we now have another name added to the list - Ezri Konsa.

The Aston Villa center-back, who has also been deployed as a full-back, has reportedly been called up by Gareth Southgate.

At this rate, England could field a starting 11 of defenders...

Jordan Henderson's fall from grace has been spectacular Gareth Southgate was still picking him as recently as last November when he started a 2-0 Wembley win against Malta. He has defended him against his critics...been to watch him in Holland....and now he's bombed himimageimageJust over 30 minutes to go...Confirmation of Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for Euro 2024 is just 30 minutes away.

We know a good amount about who is going, and in some way, in even bigger news, who is not.

We don't know all, though, but we will very soon...

imageimageRashford omission 'big call and the right call'Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor:

Kobbie Mainoo wasn't even born the last time England went to the Euros without Jordan Henderson.

Let that sink in...

According to reports, Brighton captain Lewis Dunk is set to be named in the provisional squad.

People have been calling for him to play for England for years, but is now the right time for him to make a major tournament squad?

He hasn't made it yet, but this would be the first step towards it.

After his performance against Belgium in the friendlies, I thought his chances were over.

I was obviously wrong.

Getting called up for your country is one of the proudest moments of a footballer's career. Three players will be feeling that right now.

That trio is Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and the Liverpool duo of Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones.

Wharton and Quansah only made their under-21 debuts in the last year, and now they are already being called up to the senior setup.

We have to remember though, it's only the provisional squad. No certainty they will make the final 26, or play for that matter.

Still, a huge achievement.

Marcus Rashfords reported omission is arguably the biggest of the lots, so far.

he has only scored eight goals for Manchester United this season, and has been miles off his best form, but is it the right decision?

imageimageGrealish GOOD for provisional squad Jack Grealish has reportedly done enough to make the cut.

The Manchester City man has seen game time tough to come by this season, due to injuries and form.

However, Gareth Southgate has decided to include him in his provisional squad for Euro 2024.

Grealish is a superstar when he is on it, but he hasn't been for the majority of this season.

He is going to have to impress on the training camp if he wants to go to Germany. Southgate doesn't seem as sentimental this time.

Just last month, Mail Sport's Chris Wheeler responded to Marcus Rashford calling out his critics.

It has been a season of lows for Rashford, and it has just gotten even worse...

imageimageimageNo Rashford recall...Another big star is OUT... and it's Marcus Rashford.

A year ago, this was unthinkable, he seemed like a man on a mission, and at the World Cup, he shone.

How times can change, and rapidly.

Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel has shared that Marcus Rashford is set to miss the cut and will miss out on a place at the Euros.

A massive decision by Gareth Southgate!

So, I think you all need to hear it. Prepare yourselves, it may shock you.

With Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling missing out, it will be the first time in 14 years England will play in a major tournament with neither of them.

The last time England took a squad to a tournament without Henderson or Sterling was the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Crazy, right?

Euro 2024 hosts, Germany, have already announced their squad as they look to triumph internationally once again.

Julian Nagelsmann made some brutal decisions, just like it seems Southgate has done.

Leon Goretzka and Mats Hummels are just two of the big names who have missed out on selection.

That's just the start of it...

imageimageimageJames to miss out?It has not been a season to remember for Reece James.

There is no doubting his talents, whatsoever, he is a special player. However, injuries are blighting what could be a sensational career.

After six months out, James returned to action with Chelsea, but in his second game back got sent off.

Now, he has been dealt another blow. It is being reported that he will not be selected for England for the upcoming Euros.

It's not surprising, but it's a shame for him.

I just love the excitement of it all, it's just getting me amped of for a summer full of international football.

Anyway, let's have a look at what we know so far...

IN: Jarell Quansah, Curtis Jones, Luke Shaw, Levi Colwill, Jarrad Branthwaite, Eberechi Eze, Adam Wharton, Marc Guehi, Dean Henderson, Anthony Gordon, Jarrod Bowen, James Maddison, Ivan Toney, Kobbie Mainoo.

OUT: Jordan Henderson, Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling.

Goalkeeper: Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope, Jordan Pickford

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Luke Shaw, Eric Dier, Benjamin White, Kyle Walker, Conor Coady

Midfielders: Jordan Henderson, Phil Foden, Declan Rice, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, James Maddison, Conor Gallagher, Jude Bellingham

Attackers: Marcus Rashford, Callum Wilson, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling

We already know that this year's will look a little bit different...

After the heartbreak of missing out on the World Cup in 2022, Ivan Toney is edging closer to making the cut for Euro 2024.

It is understood that Toney has been selected for England's provisional squad, despite his recent dip in form for Brentford.

What does this mean for Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke?

imageimageKobbie Mainoo makes the cutMatt from Essex, it seems Gareth Southgate agrees with you...

Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel has just perfectly timed his last post and revealed that Kobbie Mainno will be in the provisional squad.

Mainoo is such a talented player, he stole the show when he made his full debut for the Three Lions against Belgium in March.

Fully deserved.

imageimageFAN OPINION: Will Henderson ever play for England again?Matt, Essex (via X): (Henderson is a) much better player than a lot of the internet made him out to be, but not good enough anymore. Too many younger, better players coming through (Wharton, Mainoo, etc.) who need to get into the environment ASAP.imageimagePOLL: Will Henderson ever play for England again? This feels like the end of Jordan Henderson in an England shirt, doesn't it?

The writing feels like it's been on the wall for a while. With all the talent coming through, such as Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo.

So, what do you all think, has Henderson played his last game for England?

imageimageMadders makes it The names just keep on coming in.

It is understood that James Maddison is set to make the provisional squad for Euro 2024.

It's going to be a manic few weeks for the Spurs man, he is currently in Australia at the moment for a friendly with Newcastle.

He will surely be taking that game easy now...

imageimageIs this the end of Henderson's England days? This is the big news, isn't it?

Jordan Henderson has not made the cut, he will not be travelling to Germany for Euro 2024.

It seems his move away from Liverpool may have come to bite him while opening doors for his former teammates.

He is usually seen as Mr. Dependable by Gareth Southgate, but could his days in an England shirt be over?

imageimageimageWho will play Kane's understudy? Now this is a conversation we have been having for a while...

Everybody knows Harry Kane will start up top for England this summer. He is their captain and arguably the best striker in world football, right now.

The real question is, who will Gareth Southgate pick to play his understudy.

Ollie Watkins? Ivan Toney? Dominic Solanke?

Will two of them make it, or just the one? My bet is on two for the provisional squad, and surely Watkins will make up one of those spots.

We will have to wait and see.

Liverpool's Jarell Quansah is in line to make the provisional squad for Euro 2024. Simply incredible.

The centre-back has had a breakthrough season for Liverpool this year, displacing Ibrahima Konate to stand alongside Virgil van Dijk.

He has been impressive and it looks like he has caught a certain Gareth Southgate's attention.

Curtis Jones has too, he is set for his first senior squad inclusion.

imageimage'Odds still stacked against Shaw to make final cut'Nathan Salt, Mail Sport:

Well, for two of their players anyway. Just as I clicked send on my last post, Sami Mokbel reported what we already thought.

Raheem Sterling is set to miss out on the Euros, and so is his teammate, Ben Chilwell.

The left-back spot is a bit of a conundrum for Gareth Southgate. We already know Luke Shaw is in line for inclusion for the provisional squad, but remember, he is not exactly at match fitness.

So, who will the other left-back be, and will Shaw even make the final cut?

imageimageNo Raheem Sterling?Raheem Sterling's international fortunes are set to take another hit.

According to reports, Sterling will not be on his way to Germany for Euro 2024.

In truth, it's not surprising, is it?

Sterling has not been selected by Southgate since England were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by France.

The amount of talent England have on the wings, and his recent form meant not many people expected to see him involved.

And it seems like he won't be.

The names are flying into us here at Mail Sport thanks to our reporter, Sami Mokbel.

He has now revealed that both Jarrad Branthwaite and the injured Luke Shaw will be included in the squad.

Shaw had been a huge doubt for the Euros due to injury, but it seems he may have recovered just in time.

imageimageQuartet of Palace players? At this rate, we are going to know the whole squad by 12pm...

Crystal Palace have been on fire lately, and it seems to have caught the eye of Gareth Southgate.

They are set to have four players called up for the provisional squad, Eberechi Eze, Adam Wharton, Marc Guehi, and Dean Henderson.

Some surprising inclusions there, but warranted.

imageimageGordon set to be called up...Craig Hope, Mail Sport:

Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel is on a roll this morning and has just revealed that Jarrod Bowen is set to be included in England's provisional squad.

Bowen has impressed for both club and country this season and many were calling for him to be named in the squad.

It could mean a big name misses out, but who?

imageimageJordan Henderson set to miss out!Big, big news!

Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel has revealed that Jordan Henderson is set to be omitted from Gareth Southgate's provisional squad.

Sami has also shared that Levi Colwill is in a strong position to be named in the squad. It's all happening and we are still just over three hours away.

Who will benefit?

imageimageWho has earned a ticket to the Euros training camp? It's that time of year...

It's a day where dreams can be made, or crushed. In just a few hours, Gareth Southgate will name his provisional squad for Euro 2024.

Who will make it, or will not?

It will all be confirmed at 2pm, but there are already reports circling of omissions and inclusions. We have got you covered for all of them.

The international summer starts now!
