Sven-Goran Eriksson has disclosed the heartwarming details of Manchester United legend David Beckham's visit to his Bjorkefors farm, bringing along "six litres of wine" from significant dates in Eriksson's life.
The Swedish former football manager, who conveyed in January his diagnosis with terminal cancer and the possibility of having just one year left to live, expressed admiration over Beckham's thoughtful gesture during a weekend interview on Radio Sweden's P4 Varmland. "He came with six litres of wine from dates that were important to me," remarked Eriksson, touched by Beckham's recognition of the years pivotal to his career - 1948, his birth year; 1982, marking his UEFA Cup victory with IF Bentley; and 2000, celebrating the Serie A championship he clinched for Lazio.
Speaking fondly of the former England captain's authenticity, Eriksson said: "He had wine from 1948 the year I was born, very nice of him. He is genuine, he could have been a big diva, but he is quite the opposite."
The ex-England manager recounted how Beckham also appreciated traditional Swedish dishes at the farm: "He ate herring and potatoes and elk meat. The previous day he had sent a chef who fixed the food, and then he came and was here for a day.
"We sat chatting, a lot about football."
The visit evidently left an impression on Eriksson, who concluded: "It confirms, in a way, how great he is. He didn't have to come here. I felt proud that he came."
During his time as England manager, Eriksson awarded Beckham the captain's armband.
