Man Utd hope to fast-track Zirkzee transfer with quick sale of Greenwood
Source:Inews.co.uk -

Three Italian clubs are preparing bids for Mason Greenwood as Manchester United look to raise funds for a squad overhaul this summer.

After a successful season on loan at Getafe last term, Greenwood has attracted interest from across Europe and is expected to be part of a mass exodus of talent at Old Trafford, with Napoli joining front-runners Juventus and Lazio in the race for his signature.

i understands United are looking to recoup around PS30m for the 22-year-old and are adamant he will not be sold on the cheap. The club retain the option of extending his contract, which expires in 2025, by another year.

However, signing a new forward is a top priority for United this summer and a quick sale of Greenwood is their preferred route as they edge closer to bringing in a replacement.

A move for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee is progressing and other targets, including Lille's Jonathan David, have been identified. The 6ft 4in Zirkzee is seen as the perfect profile to help lessen the workload on Rasmus Hojlund but several other clubs are interested in the Netherlands international, pushing United to move quickly.

Charges of attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault against Greenwood were dropped in February last year, with United and the player deciding it best that he resume his career elsewhere following a six-month internal investigation.

Greenwood denied the allegations and has not been convicted of any offences.

The United academy graduate scored 10 goals on loan at Getafe last season and impressed with his all-round performances, helping him win plenty of admirers among clubs in Italy, Spain and Germany.

Funds across many top European clubs are tight, leaving United facing a potentially long negotiation process. Sources said another loan move could be considered with an obligation to buy added in.

Getafe are certainly keen to explore the loan option.

"We have fifteen in the squad plus Greenwood, who we hope to give good news about soon and I hope will stay another year," Getafe president Angel Torres told Mundo Deportivo last week.

"As the press says, there are many offers and we will abide by what Manchester United say."

There are also "some" unnamed English clubs reportedly monitoring the situation, one source said.

Fears over what reaction signing Greenwood would provoke mean such information is unlikely to be made public unless a deal is close to being completed. A loan move could be used as a litmus test over the ill-feeling towards the young forward, but even that may be seen as too problematic.

Other players also look likely to head for the Old Trafford exit in the coming weeks. Victor Lindelof is reportedly in talks with Fenerbahce, coached by former United boss Jose Mourinho, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also wanted in Turkey, with Galatasaray monitoring his situation.

Casemiro is another who has long-standing interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia. New co-owners Ineos are keen to move some of the club's biggest earners on, with Raphael Varane having already departed on a free transfer.
