Sir Jim Ratcliffe's plans to invest PS50million into the Carrington training ground is a sign of how much Man United have underinvested for a number of years.

That is the view of former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the refurbishment is an attempt to help the club catch up on some of their Premier League rivals.

Man United confirmed the work will begin immediately as they look to deliver a "world-class" football facility at Carrington.

It comes after the training ground facilities were one of the areas Ratcliffe admitted needed upgrading on his arrival at Old Trafford.

The INEOS chief has been vocal about improving the standards at the club and suggested the facilities at Carrington had "fallen below some of our peers".

Man United set for investment after Sir Jim Ratcliffe criticism Borson believes the investment is likely to be over a long period of time rather than the cash being spent all in one go.

He told Football Insider: "They are just looking to catch up.

"It's simply a case of years of lack of investment catching up on United and one of the many things Ratcliffe suggested he'd been surprised about on his arrival.

"I'd like to see what the PS50million investment into Carrington looks like.

"I think the PS50million is a sign United have underinvested for a number of years in that part of the business."
