Manchester United transfer target Matthijs de Ligt has already said that he is not motivated by money amid talk of the club's interest.

The Athletic have reported that Erik ten Hag is 'seriously considering' a move for the Bayern Munich defender this summer. United are keen to strengthen their defensive options over the transfer window with Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite also a target.

It is added that the pursuit of De Ligt does not depend on if United sign Branthwaite or not. Signing two central defenders will, however, depend on outgoings over the window.

Amid the interest, previous comments from De Ligt will go down well with United and Ten Hag. The defender spoke about how money is not a motivation in his choices, something that is refreshing to hear from a player linked with United.

"I tried to shut myself off (from speculation] as much as possible," he told Dutch outlet AD back in 2019. "But you always get something with it.

"(Money) played no role for me. Everyone who knows me knows that too.

"Mino (Raiola) is my agent, he deals with the business side of things, but that came only after my my sporting choice was made. Money has never been leading."

The 24-year-old has been with Bayern since the summer of 2022, but was in and out of the starting XI in the season just gone. He has also been an unused substitute for all three Netherlands games in Euro 2024 so far.
