Manchester United's transfer business is expected to gather pace over the next few weeks as the 2024/25 season edges closer. Erik ten Hag's squad is in desperate need of improvement in a number of positions meaning the United team could look very different for the upcoming campaign.

The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League last season but the Dutchman salvaged his job with an FA Cup win over Manchester City. Now, attention turns to the transfer window and plenty of players have been tipped for moves.

As well as a new centre-back, possible reinforcements in midfield and attack, United's squad requires attention. Here, MEN Sport has taken a look at the latest United news and gossip has been doing the rounds.

De Ligt becomes option Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt is now a viable option for Manchester United this summer, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein.

The 24-year-old is said to be viewed as a potential candidate to strengthen Erik ten Hag's back line. Talks between the two clubs are yet to take place but the Netherlands international is now a serious target.

It's also claimed that United's pursuit of De Ligt is 'independent' to their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, who remains a priority.

MEN Sport says: "When the first sign of interest in De Ligt came about, I did a piece on how his style of play and characteristics make him a good fit to United. His strong and physical frame would strengthen Ten Hag's options and his passing ability makes him even more attainable.

"There is certainly an argument that United need more than one defensive reinforcements this summer. Should De Ligt and Branthwaite sign, the defence would be drastically better off than last year."

Araujo 'offer' made Another centre-back option, Barcelona's Ronald Araujo. According to reports in South America, United have made an opening offer for the Uruguay international.

It's reported that there have been 'three offers' put on the table for the defender. The other bids are said to have come from Man City and Newcastle. However, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will entertain a move for their defender.

MEN Sport says: "Another centre-back and another proven defender who would improve United's defence. However, unlike De Ligt, Araujo would cost United a big fee and would take some temptation to move him away from Spain.

"With Man City and Newcastle also said to be interested, United need to avoid a bidding war for one of their priority targets. The 25-year-old is a proven centre-back but United's best goal is to step away from this pursuit."
