Leeds United starlet Archie Gray is on the brink of joining Brentford in a PS35m deal. The Bees have fought off strong competition from a host of Premier League clubs to land the 18-year-old.
With it being reported that the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were all vying for his signature this summer, the sudden pace of the Bees, who were only reported to hold interest in Gray today, has caught many off guard as they agreed to personal terms with Gray.
After the youngster's impressive 2023/24 campaign in which he played 50 times under manager Daniel Farke and secured himself the club's Young Player of the Season award as well as the EFL's Young Player of the Season and Apprentice of the Season awards, it was expected that Leeds would struggle to hold onto the star.
Earlier in the season, Gray spoke about how his debut season in the senior setup with the Whites had gone and highlighted Farke's impact on his development so far. He said: "I'm lucky with the season and team that I've come in to because the experience I'm getting now is second to none. It's my first time playing professional football and I've been lucky with the manager [Daniel Farke] trusting me and all the games I've had, I'm really grateful.
"I'm lucky to have the teammates that I've got, the manager and his coaching staff, and also the people around me. I've enjoyed every moment of playing for Leeds, I'm still a kid and I'm taking in every experience. I love being around the team and I'm enjoying every moment.
"Ever since I was young I used to watch my dad (Andy) play and I heard about my uncle playing and my grandad Frank, I've always had to live up to it. My dad's been really good with me for advice, but I've been very lucky that everything has come together for me. Ever since I was 15 things have come at me so quickly, but I've just got to be grateful for what I've got and keep improving."
It has now emerged, though, that Gray is set to undergo a medical with the Bees, who have reportedly agreed personal terms with the player. Brentford are thought to have manoeuvred themselves into the strongest position to complete the deal.
Interest in Gray remains from elsewhere but, if all goes according to plan on the player's side, the Bees can be expected to reach an agreement with Leeds for a fee in the region of PS35million. Despite Gray being under contract until 2028, it's widely expected that due to their financial situation, Leeds were going to offload at least one of their top assets up for sale in order to help balance the books.
Whilst that was thought to be one of Crysencio Summerville or Wilfried Gnonto, it appears as though Gray is the one that'll be leaving Elland Road this summer even after he signed a three-year extension on his current contract in January earlier this year.
