Manchester United's defence was inconsistent last season. Injuries didn't help, with Erik ten Hag selecting a different back four almost every week. It's probably the position which requires the most steadiness within the sport. As a result, the Reds shipped goals galore.

Raphael Varane has now left the club on a free transfer. The Frenchman's minutes need replacing with genuine quality. Jarrad Branthwaite's name was the one most linked with filling the void, though his asking price remains north of the PS70m mark. The general feeling is that the Reds aren't willing to pay that much.

Hence, Matthijs de Ligt appears to be the new frontrunner. The Dutchman has endured a mixed spell at Bayern Munich, while the incoming Jonathan Tah makes it even tougher for the former Ajax man to obtain minutes.

Now, Sky Sports News' Dharmesh Sheth has provided an update on that front, claiming United are in 'positive' talks over the signing of De Ligt.

To further add to that, there's a growing feeling all parties want to get the transfer done, which is obviously encouraging, particularly in regard to pushing a transfer through quickly.

De Ligt has worked with Ten Hag previously from their time together at Ajax, as the Reds manager looks to surround himself with more familiarity.

In terms of stylistic fit, De Ligt feels like the perfect partner for Lisandro Martinez.

The only concern here is the injury issues. De Ligt has had problems all throughout his career, mostly with his knee. Let's hope the worst is firmly behind him in that regard as the last thing this club needs is another injury prone defender.
