Liverpool 'enter race' to sign £85m midfielder wanted by Man United
Source:Liverpool Echo:

Liverpool are once again being credited with an interest in signing Benfica midfielder Joao Neves.

The Reds are yet to announce their first signing of the summer, but that has not stopped rumours swirling over potential new additions. Arne Slot gave his first press conference as Liverpool's head coach on Friday, and will now be busy assessing the squad in pre-season training.

Neves was first linked with a move to Anfield earlier this year. Since then, the Portugal international has been tipped to move to Manchester United in the event he leaves Benfica.

Reports have speculated that Neves has a EUR120 million (PS102 million) release clause in his contract at the Primeira Liga club. Recent weeks have seen links between Neves and Liverpool quieten down, but now a fresh update has emerged about the midfielder's future.

According to Portuguese news outlet O Jogo, via Paisley Gates, the Reds are one of a host of Premier League clubs to plot a move to sign Neves.

It has been claimed that Liverpool are joined by Man United, Arsenal and Man City in showing an interest in signing Neves. The report claims that a price tag of at least EUR100 million (PS85 million) has been set by Benfica for Neves' signature, which would be below the fee in the player's release clause.

Liverpool have been linked with several potential new midfielders this summer, including Atalanta duo Ederson and Teun Koopmeiners. The Redd added four new midfielders to their squad last year in Jurgen Klopp's final summer window as Reds manager.

Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister all signed for Liverpool last summer. It remains to be seen if the Reds, led by new sporting director Richard Hughes, will go back into the transfer market for more reinforcements in the middle of the park.
