Manchester United might copy Pep Guardiola tactic and spring Leny Yoro surprise

Manchester United fans will admit Pep Guardiola has been at the forefront of evolving tactics.

Guardiola made playing false nines fashionable, he introduced playing out from the back to England and, more recently, began to play central defenders in full-back roles.

Other managers have followed Guardiola's tactical innovations and his former assistant manager Mikel Arteta picked up the central defender idea and ran with it at the Emirates.

Arteta has played Ben White out of position and Guardiola has changed the roles of Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol, with all three of those regularly playing as full-backs last season, providing extra defensive solidity on the wings and an advantage in build-up play.

Centre backs tend to be significantly better one-on-one defenders than traditional full-backs and that's an obvious positive, but playing a natural centre half as a full-back also allows teams to have a back-three in build-up, which helps to press high and defend counter-attacks.

Playing central defenders out of position became a popular trend last season and Liverpool and Aston Villa played Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa as their full-backs respectively.

The four teams who finished at the top Premier League all used the innovation, which suggests there's an advantage in doing so if implemented correctly.

Now enter United and Erik ten Hag, who has often instructed his full-backs to play an inverted role, which is why Diogo Dalot comes into midfield from the right.

Perhaps Ten Hag is happy with his current system and believes it doesn't need to be tweaked, but an elite manager adapts to the players at his disposal and the United squad is changing this summer, with Leny Yoro coming in and Aaron Wan-Bissaka expected to leave.

Although moving on Wan-Bissaka would leave Dalot as the only senior right-back in the squad, Yoro is flying to Manchester for a medical and is an option in that role.

Yoro is a natural centre-back and made 44 appearances at the heart of Lille's defence last season, but starting in central defence at just 18 years old in the Premier League is bound to be a tough challenge and he could be eased into the team at right-back.

Like every player at his age, Yoro needs time to physically develop and playing him at right-back would allow him to improve and gain experience without coming under the cosh in central defence.

As the last line of defence, centre-backs are exposed and tested by the opposition more than any other outfield players and Yoro might not be ready for that challenge.

He is a defender for the future - United hope he'll become one of the world's best - but immediately chucking him into the deep end is inadvisable.

Yoro has the qualities to excel at right-back for United.

It might not be a position Yoro has played before, but he's comfortable with the ball at his feet, he intelligently reads the game and his natural athleticism will help him adapt.

His long-term future is in the middle but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him at right-back this season.
