Sir Jim Ratcliffe speaking in 2024 Sir Jim Ratcliffe has announced job cuts at Manchester United affecting almost a quarter of the staff Morale among Manchester United staff is low ahead of the club's US tour - after hundreds of employees were told their jobs are at risk.

United fly to the US on Wednesday for the club's pre-season tour, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's planned 250 job cull having started to take effect. Staff at United were informed on Tuesday that their roles are at risk, while others who were originally down to go on the US tour were withdrawn from it late on, to cut costs.

United's touring party to the US comprises around 125, including the players and coaching staff, the total personnel down on last year's summer tour, which also took in games in America.

Those United employees whose jobs are at risk were told in individual meetings, with the situation set to accelerate in the coming weeks with redundancies confirmed.

In the last decade, United's net spend on players is PS1.1billion, while Real Madrid's is just PS200m, with the Spanish giants continuing to be successful in that time, in stark contrast to the Red Devils. United announced last month they were cutting almost a quarter of their 1,112 workforce as part of a major operation to slash running costs.

United director Sir Dave Brailsford has overseen a wide-ranging review of the club since INEOS chief Ratcliffe took control of football operations.

The review concluded current staffing levels were too high and savings could be made around "non-essential" activities. United declined to comment on the proposed redundancies.
