'Of course' - Wes Brown is completely convinced that 'there's still a place' in Erik ten Hag's squad for 'high-class' Man Utd star

Wes Brown has insisted that one "high-class" Manchester United star could remain part of Erik ten Hag's first-team squad at Old Trafford for the 2024-25 season.

Manchester United embarked on their pre-season tour earlier this month, as Erik ten Hag begins his preparation for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

The Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg in their opening pre-season match before bouncing back with a 2-0 win on Saturday against Rangers.

United will play Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool in their remaining pre-season fixtures before the Community Shield clash with Manchester City on 10th August.

Ten Hag has been missing several first-team players during the pre-season tour after this summer's Copa America and Euro 2024 in Germany.

MORE UNITED STORIES

Harry Maguire was forced to miss out on Euro 2024 this summer due to injury, despite being a key player for England under Gareth Southgate.

The 31-year-old England defender featured regularly for United last season, despite Ten Hag stripping Maguire of the captaincy last summer.

Maguire had been tipped with an exit from Old Trafford in 2023 and was linked with West Ham, but the ex-Red Devils skipper remained at the Premier League club.

However, the Three Lions star faces increasing competition in the United first team, with highly rated defender Leny Yoro arriving at Old Trafford this summer.

"Of course, there's still a place for him [Maguire]," Brown told ManchesterWorld.

"And even last season you wouldn't have expected him to play that many games, but with injuries he came in and handled things very professionally and got on with the job.

"That's the sort of player you need. But it's whether Harry will be happy enough to do it again - you don't know.

"He would have gone to the Euros had he been fit. He's a high-class player who will want to play every week."

Brown on what Maguire needs Maguire has missed both of the opening pre-season matches for United this summer, with the England international recovering from his injury setback.

Brown has claimed that the United star would benefit deeply from a solid pre-season return and stressed the importance of him playing ahead of the new season.

"A full pre-season will give him a good base," he added.

"Pre-season is very important; you don't understand that until you're a bit older. With Harry not going to the Euros, it looks like he's going to be fit [for the new season].

"If he doesn't pick up anything in the next week or two, his pre-season should be excellent and he'll be raring to go."
