Altay Bayindir has given Ten Hag a ruthless decision to make

Erik ten Hag has earned a reputation for making ruthless decisions during his time in charge of Manchester United, and now he has another one to make after a disastrous start to the season.

United fell to their sixth defeat from their opening 10 matches of the new campaign as they twice let a lead slip in their terrible 3-2 home defeat by Galatasaray on Tuesday night.

What is so alarming is that United are making many of the same mistakes in those defeats. Perhaps even more concerning is that the players who have committed them have kept their places throughout.

Goalkeeper latest: What Ten Hag said about Onana

It is harsh to label Andre Onana the sole reason for their latest loss, or any of them in fact, given the wider issues at play, but it has now reached the point where he, like any effort on goal, is hard to defend any more.

The Cameroonian struggled in the first few matches of the season and should have been punished for his wild challenge on Sasa Kalajdzic against Wolves, but his first inexcusable error was his howler against Bayern Munich last month.

Even that error against Bayern was hardly the reason for United's defeat, but against Galatasaray, he reached a new low with a terrible display that directly contributed to the loss.

It was his careless pass that led to a penalty and a red card, which swung the game in the visitors favour, and his poor decision-making that saw him commit far too early when Mauro Icardi made amends for his penalty miss from a one-on-one shortly afterwards.

For some supporters, this is the final straw and while Ten Hag might have long-term faith in Onana, it might be in the best interest of all parties if he were taken out of the firing line against Brentford this weekend

"We are happy with our goalkeeping group," Ten Hag insisted at full-time. "Definitely with Andre, and Andre was in one semi-finals of the Champions League, last season he was in a final of the Champions League, he has the capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

"He showed that and he will do. We have already seen in games his great capabilities, also his personality after he made a mistake. He will bounce back and I'm sure he will do in the coming games as well."

Onana has been honest about his poor level of performance since he joined the club, but rather than fronting up after matches to apologise, it is now time he did the talking on the pitch instead.

While there is an argument to suggest Onana should be backed in the same way David de Gea was when he struggled at the start of his first season with the club, the case for change is compelling given there is an obvious candidate to replace him.

Altay Bayindir arrived as a first-choice 'keeper in his own right and will be itching for an opportunity to prove himself at his new club if he gets the chance.

Bayindir, who played 145 matches for Turkish giants Fenerbache, is perhaps the most eligible backup choice the club has had since Sergio Romero, and the case to play him will only grow until fans finally get to see what he has to offer for themselves.

It is also in United's best interests to give Bayindir some first-team exposure now, given he could be relied upon for a handful of games next year when Onana is likely to be involved in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Turkish shot-stopper was already overlooked for the Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace, and with Newcastle in the next round and no dead-rubber European ties on the horizon, there is no longer a match in which they can afford to rotate either.

It could well transpire that Onana really is the best long-term option in goal, but Ten Hag won't gain any sympathy if his poor form continues when there is a clear alternative available.

We have also seen in the past that some players thrive when they have serious competition for their starting role, and even if Bayindir doesn't end up becoming first-choice, giving him a run in the team could ignite the fire in Onana to improve himself.

Ultimately, the United manager has made it clear that there is a new set of standards at the club, but he risks undermining himself if he persists with players who are not matching them on the pitch.

United signed two goalkeepers in the summer, but they might be playing the wrong one.
