Manchester United may have been watching closely as Angel Gomes helped Lille dump Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce out of the Champions League qualifiers.
Manchester United won't have Champions League action to look forward to this season after finishing eight points off the top four.
United will instead be seeded in the Europa League and may now run into former boss Jose Mourinho.
'The Special One' is back in the game having taken charge of Turkish side Fenerbahce this summer.
The first major task was to progress in the Champions League qualifiers but Mourinho and co have some up just short against French side Lille.
Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Fenerbahce drew 1-1 back in Turkiye and were beaten 3-2 on aggregate.
Edon Zhegrova's injury-time winner handed Lille the advantage in the first leg before drama in the second leg.
MORE UNITED STORIES
Bafode Diakite's own goal in the 91st minute took the game to extra time, sparking wild scenes in the stands.
Lille then won it just with just a couple of minutes to spare in extra time as Manchester United-linked Jonathan David buried a spot kick.
Former United talent Angel Gomes was involved too, playing 82 minutes before being substituted.
Gomes has been shining for Lille and the midfielder has even been linked with RB Leipzig this summer.
The 23-year-old was handed his debut by Mourinho where he became Manchester United's youngest ever player but admitted once being blasted by the Portuguese coach in front of the United squad, in comments given to The Athletic.
Gomes understands that Mourinho was trying to do now, but may well be delighted with knocking him out of Champions League contention.
Gomes received mixed reviews from the French media for his display; here are a handful of comments about his display as Lille produced an impressive win over Fenerbahce.
"The Englishman is essential to the build-up and his technical quality managed to create a good number of gaps between the lines in the first half in particular. But against an opponent who only used long balls to exist, it was not a match made for him defensively even if he fought selflessly." - Le Petit Lillois.
"An average performance for the Englishman. In a physically committed match, the Lille midfielder showed his limitations by being moved too easily in duels. Not impactful enough in recovery, the former Mancunian was however more interesting with the ball." - Maxifoot.
"The Englishman alternated between good and bad. Beautiful dribbling and bad loss of the ball. Often very dangerous, he was the victim of many fouls from the opposing defence. Unfortunately, he was often clumsy in the final move, as evidenced by a free kick directly into the opposing wall in the 69th minute." - Homme du Match.
Mixed news for Manchester United Earlier on, we suggested that United will have been keeping tabs on Fenerbahce's progress in the Champions League qualifiers.
The bad news from their exit is that a deal for Victor Lindelof may be a little trickier now.
Mourinho is interested in signing Lindelof, who is unlikely to play a key role at Old Trafford this season.
Yet with no Champions League cash coming in, Fenerbahce may struggle to fund a deal for Lindelof and his wages.
The flip side is that United may be tempted to test the water with a move for Ferdi Kadioglu.
Full back Kadioglu missed the clash with Lille due to injury and couldn't help his side in their hour of need.
Milliyet now claim that United have put an offer on the table for Kadioglu - and he prefers a move to United over Brighton and Hove Albion.
Fenerbahce missing out on Champions League cash may make a deal for Kadioglu a little more manageable, but we would have to question if he is really a priority for United right now.
United have just signed Noussair Mazraoui, a full back who can play at left back or right back - just like Kadioglu.
Yes, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia continue to suffer injury problems but we would be surprised to see another full back arrive given the need for a midfielder this month.
