Wood, Hudson-Odoi, Danilo - Nottingham Forest injury state of play ahead of Aston Villa clash
Source: Nottinghampost

Nottingham Forest had hoped for better fortune on the injury front this season, but their luck appears slow in turning.

As they try to end a six-match winless streak, the Reds find themselves without a number of players. Taiwo Awoniyi made his comeback in Sunday's 3-0 defeat at Liverpool but will be treated with kid-gloves as Forest can ill-afford him to suffer a relapse, not least because their attacking options have been further depleted by Chris Wood being ruled out.

Next up for Steve Cooper's side is a visit from Aston Villa on Sunday. Ahead of that game at the City Ground, we take a look at the current injury state of play.

Chris Wood Injury: Hamstring.

What we know:A late change to Forest's game-plan at Anfield was required when Wood suffered an injury in the days before the game. He had scored a brace the previous week, against Luton Town, but is now expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks. His absence meant the visitors started without a recognised striker against Liverpool.

What has been said: "Unfortunately Woody picked up a hamstring injury," Cooper said before kick-off on Sunday. "He will be out for a little while with it."

He added afterwards: "He did his hamstring a couple of days ago. It couldn't be worse timing, to be honest."

Callum Hudson-Odoi Injury: Hamstring.

What we know:The summer signing pulled his hamstring during the build-up to the match with Luton. He is now facing a significant spell on the sidelines.

What has been said:"Callum is out for six weeks. He's pulled his hamstring," Cooper explained.

Divock Origi Injury: Hip.

What we know: As with Hudson-Odoi, the forward was added to the list of players sidelined prior to the clash with the Hatters. He is expected to be absent for a number of weeks.

What has been said: "Divock has got a hip injury. That is going to rule him out for a good few weeks," Cooper said post-match. "We've not had a great week (with injuries), and certainly with attacking players. Taiwo is obviously not available either, so we didn't really have any like-for-like attacking changes today."

Gonzalo Montiel Injury: Calf.

What we know: The defender was on duty with Argentina during the recent international break. He started their midweek match with Peru but was withdrawn after little more than half an hour due to suffering an injury. He returned to the UK and was due to undergo further tests to determine the extent of the problem.

What has been said: "He's only just got back in the country," Cooper said in his pre-match press conference before Luton. "We'll assess it ourselves. We've seen the initial scans and it does look like a calf injury.

"Gonzalo has only just come back, so we'll have to get the medics to assess it properly so we can see the extent of it. Hopefully it's not as bad as what it might be. It looks like a muscle injury, but we'll wait and see."

Taiwo Awoniyi Injury: Groin.

What we know:It was a big blow for the Reds when the striker suffered a groin problem during the 1-1 draw with Brentford. He suffered a similar problem last season, but it was on the opposite leg to this time around.

He made his comeback from off the bench on Merseyside. However, Cooper will tread carefully with him this week.

What has been said: "It's great he's got on," the Reds boss said afterwards. "And it's even more important he's come off unscathed. He will be good for the minutes.

"Now we've got a full training week. Hopefully he's available to do all of that, and if he is he will be in a better place in terms of availability for next Sunday against Aston Villa.

"We will take one day as it comes with it. He had an awkward injury again and we have to be careful with him - probably even more careful now because of the situation with Chris.

"He was cleared to play the minutes he did. We probably put him on slightly earlier than we should have, but we got through it and he has said he feels fine. Hopefully we can build on that this week."

Nuno Tavares Injury: Groin.

What we know: On his first start for Forest, the full-back was forced off 40 minutes into the defeat at Manchester City. He seemed to tweak something when making a forward run, and although he tried to continue after receiving treatment he eventually limped off. He was on the bench against Liverpool, having done some part-training in the build-up, but did not get on the pitch.

What we know: The Brazilian had been due to feature against Burnley in the Carabao Cup, but a late change was made as he suffered a hamstring problem. He underwent a scan prior to the clash with Chelsea and had been a doubt for the trip.

The midfielder got the go-ahead to make the starting XI at Stamford Bridge but lasted little more than 45 minutes. He pulled up towards the end of the first half and came off after receiving treatment on the pitch. He went on to withdraw from the Brazil Under-23 squad and has not been involved for the Reds since, although he joined in training to some extent last week - as did Tavares and Felipe.

What has been said: "They are back in part-training, not full training," Cooper said of the trio. "Danilo has been out for what feels like a long while, so we've really got to be careful with integrating him back in.

"They joined in with a couple of warm-ups and a couple of non-contact exercises. Hopefully that's the next step to their recovery."

Felipe Injury: Knee.

What we know: A knee issue prevented the defender from being involved in any of the Reds' pre-season games and he barely trained during the summer. He did minimal training after joining in January, too, but was able to get through matches by making "sacrifices".

He is yet to get on the pitch for the first-team this season but was on the bench against Burnley in the Carabao Cup and at Chelsea. He then played an hour for the Under-21s against Harrogate Town in the EFL Trophy but has not been in a match squad since.

What has been said: "It has not been easy for Felipe," Cooper said last week. "It's unfortunate because everyone saw, not just how well he played last season, but also how influential he was and the impact he had on others. For sure, we have missed that. If we can get him back, it will be a real bonus for everyone."

Earlier this season, Felipe said via a translator: "It was a variety of different things, different niggles. A fibrosis in the kneecap was diagnosed, and that was holding me back. But that is all recovered and resolved now.

"I had it last season. It was the same thing, it was a bit more intense. I would manage it with medication and treatment.

"I made lots of sacrifices to make it on to the pitch, so when it came to the end of the season it was quite delicate. The decision was made to have this rest and recovery period so I will have no more problems in the future."
