Evra names his best-ever Man United teammate, it's not Rooney or Ronaldo

Legendary left-back Patrice Evra is rather spoiled for choice when asked to name his best-ever Manchester United team-mate.

Making nearly 400 appearances for the Red Devils between 2006 and 2014, the Frenchman arrived when Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes and a young Cristiano Ronaldo called Old Trafford home and departed having shared a dressing room with such luminaries as Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney.

But there is one player who stands out head and shoulders above the rest when Patrice Evra looks back on his near-decade long, trophy-laden spell in England's north west.

"Giggy taught me a lot of things. When people ask me all the time the best player I played with at United, they expect me to say Wazza or Cristiano.

"I always say (Ryan) Giggs."

By Evra's own admission, he and Man United's all-time record appearance maker did not always see eye-to-eye.

The latter would frequently find himself on the wrong side of a Ryan rollicking with his rather distinctive style of throw-ins.

But Evra, one of the most creative full-backs of his generation and the prototype modern-day left-back, credits the Welsh wizard with helping to hone the sort of delivery that accounted for many of his 33 Man United assists.

"We weren't friends on the pitch! When I did that throw in with the bounce, he was like 'Why don't you throw the ball perfectly'! So we were fighting," Evra laughs.

"(But) Giggsy was the one who taught me how to cross between the legs of the defender. He said; 'Patrice, just (cross the ball) between the legs (of the defender). Strong, on the floor.

"(He taught me) many things like that."

Ryan Giggs excited about Alejandro Garnacho potential No Giggs-themed anecdote is ever complete without mention of the 13-time Premier League winner's remarkable professionalism.

It is to credit to that insatiable work-ethic that Giggs brought the curtain down on a staggering United career having made nearly 1,000 appearances over a quarter of a century.

"The way I saw Giggsy in training, it was like he lost a final of the Champions League (if he ended up on the wrong side in a practice game)," Evra recalls. "He was always on it!"

A decade on from Giggs' retirement, Man United have another Carrington graduate going from strength to strength and threatening to explode into a winger capable of defining a generation at Old Trafford.

Giggs, unsurprisingly, is a massive fan of Alejandro Garnacho.

The electrifying Argentine who, during a breakout 2024, has also earned the admiration of fellow United icons Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Roy Keane.

"Garnacho has been a breath of fresh air," Giggs told the Webby and O'Neill podcast on YouTube earlier this month.

"But remember he is a young player and there will be dips. You can't expect him to be brilliant every game."

Garnacho will hope to make his first start of the season when Man United face old rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
