Manchester United face two deadlines with Manuel Ugarte transfer

Manchester United are cutting it fine to conclude the signing of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain in time to feature in the Premier League visit of Liverpool on Sunday.

United have agreed an initial fee of PS42.3million for Ugarte, rising to PS50.8m, and the midfielder arrived in Manchester on Tuesday night. The 23-year-old has been at United's Carrington training complex to undergo a medical and film material to announce his signing, but United must register Ugarte by 12noon on Friday for him to be available for selection against Liverpool.

The transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday and the arrival of Ugarte, as well as the departure of Scott McTominay to Napoli, are both on track. McTominay flew into Naples on Thursday.

Ugarte made a clandestine exit from The Ivy restaurant in Spinningfields on Wednesday evening. His agent Jorge Mendes and his entourage acted as decoys while Ugarte was smuggled into a blacked-out van in the loading bay.

Recent United signings Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui dined nearby the day before their signings were confirmed earlier this month and were besieged by professional autograph hunters when they left. Members of Gestiftute, Mendes's agency which represents Ugarte, are believed to have flown back to Portugal on Thursday night.

United are set to line up with Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo in midfield again against Liverpool, who failed to beat United in three encounters last season. Christian Eriksen and Toby Collyer are likely to be the alternative midfielders if Ugarte is not eligible to make his debut.

United manager Erik ten Hag's pre-match press conference has been switched to 1.15pm on Friday this week.
