85 Touches, 13 duels won, 1 chance created: Man Utd's unsung hero is class act despite defeat

There are lots of negatives to take away from Manchester United's defeat to Liverpool. Noussair Mazraoui is not one of them.

Selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka was a risk for Manchester United, with the right-back one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

He wasn't immune to a poor result though, once featuring in a 5-0 home loss to Liverpool.

Replacement Noussair Mazraoui was on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool this past weekend, and despite the bad result, Manchester United's new right-back looks the part.

New signing Mazraoui was positive throughout the game, as he settles back into life playing under his former United boss Erik ten Hag.

United were undone by three Liverpool goals caused by individual mistakes from the midfield. There was not much from Mazraoui's performance to pick out that went wrong.

Mazraoui showed battling qualities during the defeat, winning more duels than any player on the pitch, 13 in total.

MORE UNITED STORIES

These included three of three aerial duels and 10 of 13 ground duels he competed for.

Mazraoui came close to scoring in the first half when his shot was saved by Alisson, one of only three efforts United had on target.

He had four touches in the Liverpool box, more than right winger Alejandro Garnacho managed, only three.

The new right-back created one goalscoring chance too, showing his forays forward can be of use, which have already yielded one assist in United's previous game.

There were times where Mazraoui's attacking tendencies put United under pressure at the back, but this is how he is asked to play, and the benefit it can bring is part of why he was brought in.

Mazraoui showed resilience It was positive to see Noussair Mazroui recover from a knock sustained at the start of the second half, and continue the game.

Mazraoui has had a poor injury record in recent seasons and his resilience is something United fans have an eye on.

So it was positive to see the new signing complete all 90 minutes, and not add to the club's ongoing full-back injury problems.

Mazraoui was nominated for United's player of the month award, which was eventually won by Amad.

He has been an unsung hero so far, and there has not been too much celebrating after two defeats in three games, but Mazraoui is certainly showing reasons to be positive, despite the general concerns at Old Trafford.
