The latest news from St James Park as Newcastle United prepare for Saturday's visit to Premier League rivals Fulham.
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore believes Eddie Howe 'has no excuses' if he is unable to deliver success for Newcastle United this season.
The former Bournemouth manager has overseen a remarkable turnaround in fortunes since he was named as successor to Steve Bruce in November 2022. After inheriting a side sat in the Premier League relegation zone, Howe led the Magpies to a mid-table position by the end of the season before guiding his side into the Champions League and their first major cup final since 1999 during his first full campaign on Tyneside. Last season provided a number of challenges as Howe's squad was decimated by injuries - but only Manchester United's FA Cup Final win over Manchester City denied the Magpies boss from reaching Europe for the second successive season.
Preparations for the current season were dominated by suggestions of an uneasy relationship between Howe and Newcastle's newly-appointed sporting director Paul Mitchell. Although recent reports have suggested the duo are ready to work together for the good of the club, Collymore insisted 'it would be ridiculous' if the Magpies did not have a shortlist of possible successor if Howe was to depart.
He told CaughtOffside: "I think that they've started the season relatively okay, and with no European football this season, there are no players flying here, there and everywhere with their country. That means Howe has no excuses in terms of bringing further success to the club. If Newcastle are fifth, sixth or seventh at a time when the likes of Aston Villa are juggling lots of different balls, I'm sure that a director of football would have been given the remit by the ownership to say, keep your eye out for other people. It would be ridiculous for Newcastle United to not have a hit-list too in case Eddie Howe decided tomorrow, for example, that, he wanted to move elsewhere. In any event, I don't think Eddie Howe is the man for longer term and the one to get them winning titles. I just don't."
Magpies star ready for new look at FulhamNewcastle have become accustomed to new looks during the opening weeks of the Premier League season.
After debuting their new home kit in the opening day win against Southampton, Eddie Howe's men donned their white, green and black third-choice kit eight days later when they battled to a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth. However, Magpies supporters had to wait until last Sunday's win at Wolverhampton Wanderers to witness the debut of United's new maroon and blue away kit that was inspired by the change kit worn by Kevin Keegan's Entertainers during the 1995/96 season.
However, there will be another different look on display when Howe's side walk out at Fulham on Saturday after Brazilian midfield duo Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton revealed new matching hairstyles via their social media accounts. Not for the first time during their time on Tyneside, the Magpies samba stars will sport bleached blonde styles, giving a somewhat different look to the midfield ranks.
