Friday 20 September 2024 22:30 Share With email Copy Link Erik ten Hag remains confident Manuel Ugarte will be a "very good player" for Manchester United, based on what he has seen from the Uruguayan's first few weeks at the club.

The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder was a late arrival in United's summer window, joining on deadline day, but has since started settling into his new surroundings.

Since returning from representing his nation in the September break, Ugarte has got his first taste of English football with appearances in our recent wins over Southampton and Barnsley, and has been continuing his adaptation in training ahead of Saturday teatime's trip to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Speaking in the second part of his pre-match press conference ahead of that game, Ten Hag underlined to journalists that Manuel will need time to carry on his transition, but there is no reason why he cannot fulfil his potential at Old Trafford in the years to come.

Part two: Press conference v Palace Video

Press conference part two | Ten Hag answers questions about Amad, Mount, Rashford and Ugarte before Palace away...

UGARTE IS BUILDING UP"He's a player very short in [number of] sessions, now he has a start in him. In Southampton, he came in as a sub. Yeah, still, he's in the process that he has come into the club. He has to come into the team and know what is the game, what are the principles, what are the rules, and know his team-mates. So, especially, know with his profile what he can contribute for his team. So yeah, we are in that process and that will take some time, but it will come, it will come in a natural way. And you can already see when he is fulfilling the process he will really be a very good player for us."

RASHFORD IS RESILIENT"I think every player who is playing in the Premier League, but definitely, in this club, you need some resilience. And not any football career is only the way up, sometimes it can also go the way down, and you have to deal with it. Marcus Rashford is experienced [enough] that he knows this, as the best [of them]. So, he knows when there are setbacks, how to fight back, how to set his career, how to set his performance, so he can confront all of it. And I think he's on the way back. He started the season very good, and now he has to continue and progress."

BIG STEPS FROM AMAD

"He's doing very well. I would say, I think, from January on, he has made big progress. Now, for every game, he's a consideration. Also, for him, yeah, I hope he keeps going in this process, and he has some attributes that can really help a team."

WE KNOW WHAT MOUNT CAN BRING"Already we have seen glimpses in the start of the season what he is capable of, and it was not a long time out. It was a quick turnaround back. But what he needs is a period, a longer period, where he can train fully with the team and play with the team, because then he can come up into speed, and then everyone will see his qualities. But, yeah, I am totally convinced I have seen again in the start of the season what he can bring to a team, and I'm sure once he is in a longer run-in, he will really improve."

WORKING ON LOWERING INJURIES

"You can't avoid [injuries]. There is so many circumstances that you don't have any influence on, and that can always happen. But there are also circumstances where you can take control. We did some reviewing over the summer, and, yeah, we are still working on improvements all the time to take control as much as possible."
