Everton's former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Erik ten Hag may be able to "dig his heels in" and secure a bumper payday if he is sacked by Man United.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old - who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs and their boardrooms - claimed the Dutchman's team could negotiate a bigger figure if United want to stagger the payments over time.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (14 October) that Man United will sack manager Ten Hag if the club lose their next two fixtures against Brentford and Fenerbahce.

Sources say the Dutchman, 54, is "clinging on" to his job at Old Trafford after a dismal start in the 2024-25 campaign - which has left the club 14th in the Premier League.

Ten Hag was handed a one-year contract extension in the off-season despite rumours about a potential sacking at the end of last term.

He has spoken publicly about his job in his pre-Brentford press conference, insisting things are "quiet" behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag could 'dig his heels in' for big Man United payday, says Wyness Wyness told Football Insider's Insider Track podcast: "I've been involved in many management changes.

"You sit down with them and negotiate.

"There are obviously contractual issues, you don't want to pay the full amount out - you want to pay it over time.

"His side may say they want more money because it's being paid out over time, rather than in one go.

"It's not just him, it's also his backroom staff.

"If it has to change during the season, it's not what Man United would have wanted."
