Arsenal set to make Emirates Stadium expansion decision to match Man Utd and Tottenham
Source:Football.London -

Arsenal are reportedly investigating ways to expand the Emirates Stadium in an attempt to keep up with their Premier League rivals in regards to matchday revenue.

The Times claims the Gunners are looking at ways to upgrade and expand their current 60,000-seater home. The Emirates is still one of the newer stadiums in the Premier League having moved across North London from Highbury in 2006.

At the time of the move, it was the biggest capacity top-flight stadium in London, but that's now been surpassed by arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who earn close to PS6million from every match at their 62,850-capacity venue. The Gunners are the latest Premier League club looking to improve their revenue streams with West Ham United and Spurs both moving into bigger grounds, while Manchester United and Newcastle are both exploring potentially building new stadiums.

Liverpool have also increased the capacity at Anfield in recent seasons 61,015 supporters by developing certain areas of the ground. Arsenal are unable to significantly increase their matchday revenue without a renovation.

The report claims the Gunners earned PS102.6million from games in 2022-23, which the Arsenal Supporters' Trust estimates will increase to more than PS120million in the next accounts as a result of reaching the Champions League knockout stages last season. Mikel Arteta's side regularly play in front of sell-out crowds and the club acknowledge they need to keep up with the demand for tickets and adapt to supporters' changing catering and corporate needs.

Arsenal's owner, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, built the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium in 2020 which has a capacity of 70,240 is home of the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams NFL franchises. However, it's not yet clear how the Gunners would go about increasing capacity in a cost-effective way having added 780 seats to the overall capacity in 2018.

One avenue, according to the report, could be changing the current roof at the Emirates, with lowering the pitch not an option as it would affect sightlines. The home of Arsenal currently has 146 executive boxes, which is twice as many as their North London rivals who acknowledge that fans behaviours have changed and prefer using hospitality lounges.

Arsenal already have some of the most expensive matchday tickets in the division and have appointed Populous - the firm that designed the Emirates - to improve the catering potential.
