Speculation around Erik ten Hag's future has been put to rest as Manchester United confirms it has parted ways with the manager.
Ten Hag's two-and-a-half-year reign came to an end less than 24 hours after the club lost 2-1 to West Ham United at the weekend.
He was informed of his dismissal following a meeting held by the club's board.
The Red Devils confirmed the news on Monday evening (AEDT).
"Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men's first-team manager," the club said in a statement.
"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future."
Ten Hag becomes the fifth permanent manager to be sacked by the English giants since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Manchester United has struggled in recent months, falling to 14th on the Premier League table.
The 54-year-old led the club to two domestic trophies: an EFL Cup title and the FA Cup.
The club has recorded just one win in its last eight games across all competitions.
Ten Hag's interim successor was confirmed as Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was a member of his coaching staff and a Manchester United hero as a player.
