Gary Neville felt Erik ten Hag could save himself with a win over Chelsea at the weekend - but Manchester United opted to sack him just 24 hours after losing to West Ham.
The loss at the London Stadium was the Red Devils' fourth reverse in their opening nine games of the Premier League season as they sit in the bottom half of the table. Ten Hag was under pressure to begin the season and that had only mounted in recent months.
He had survived several moments whereby the Old Trafford hierarchy could've pulled the trigger and sacked him. Their loss to West Ham proved to be the final straw and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now looking for a new boss - with Ruben Amorim his prime target.
Neville though was convinced Ten Hag would get the opportunity to turn things around when they hosted Chelsea next Sunday. He felt a win could help him save his job, but the Dutchman hasn't been afforded that opportunity.
"They are 14th, they've spent a fortune. I was quite clear at the end of last season that if they're in that same position in the league after the first few months there will be a lot of questions being asked. They've got a game in midweek but it will all come down to next weekend's game against Chelsea."
Neville conceded that decent teams had seen off United this season - and feared that would be the case again. Already Liverpool and Tottenham have recorded dominant wins over the Manchester outfit at Old Trafford.
