'Fantastic' Ruben Amorim made instant impression, Sporting star's words look good for Manchester United

Manchester United are set to welcome Ruben Amorim as new head coach, once his deal at Sporting expires.

Ruben Amorim starts work as Manchester United head coach on November 11, and expectations are high.

Sporting's 4-1 Champions League win over Manchester City shows what Ruben Amorim is capable of, with the right time to create his team.

Amorim will not get a lot of time at Manchester United, but Gary Neville has suggested there will be no super-ambitious targets early on, simply to get the team playing attractive football and win games.

But there is a strong chance Amorim gets off to a flier, and is able to revolutionise United quickly.

Yet he feels as though the outgoing head coach has already made a big impression on him.

Debast also bears no grudges towards Amorim's departure, and wishes him well at Manchester United.

MORE UNITED STORIES

He told Mais Futebol: "Ruben is a fantastic coach. I only worked with him for three months and I would have liked him to stay, but I'm happy because he deserves it.

"It's like when a player plays well and then gets transferred, so he deserves it and we're happy for him."

Debast is excited for the challenge of Sporting continuing the Amorim project and demonstrating there is life without the Manchester United-bound coach.

He said: "No one was prepared to lose Ruben Amorim, but it's part of life. We have to prove to Ruben and the club that we can move forward without him."

Sporting recruitment will be key Ruben Amorim has pledged not to sign any Sporting players in January, re-affirming this stance after their win over City, pressed over Viktor Gyokeres.

Next summer will be a different matter. Sporting's win over City on a big night with lots of attention on Amorim really put them on the map, and highlighted the talent in their squad.

Gyokeres, along with Pedro Goncalves and Goncalo Inacio may all be ready to move on, while youngster Geovany Quenda is generating real interest too, and it's not just United who are paying attention.

If Sporting are able to continue the Amorim project, their success will be dependent on their recruitment being able to successfully fill any squad gaps which get created.
