'It's hard to rate him': International boss defends Man Utd ace as media suggest starting role now 'in danger'

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund is seeking to really kickstart his season but had a quiet outing for Denmark against Spain.

Goals have not exactly been flowing for Manchester United this season.

United have scored just 12 goals in 11 Premier League games; only Everton, Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer.

Joshua Zirkzee is already being linked with Juventus after scoring just once in 17 games across all competitions.

Then there is Rasmus Hojlund, who has come back from injury with just one goal in seven Premier League outings.

Hojlund left United teammates frustrated against Leicester City with his movement seemingly leaving players wanting more.

New boss Ruben Amorim will certainly want more from Hojlund; he saw Viktor Gyokeres become a goalscoring machine under his tutelage at Sporting.

MORE UNITED STORIESHojlund will look to follow in the footsteps of his fellow Scandinavian but he endured a quiet outing for Denmark against Spain on Friday night.

Denmark boss Brian Riemer has now reflected on Hojlund's display and simply feels that it's too difficult to rate his performance - because he just didn't get enough chances in the final third.

Riemer hopes to see Hojlund turn in big displays in the future, especially against teams who are maybe a little closer to Denmark in terms of quality.

"I think it's hard to rate him on that match.

We met a strong team, and it is not so easy to create chances against them," said Riemer.

"I hope that we can help to serve Rasmus even better, because one of the criteria for scoring goals as a striker is also that you get some chances, and after all it has to come from both the wide and central points.

"We must all make ourselves better at helping Rasmus, Kasper Dolberg, Jonas Wind, Yussuf and whoever else can play forward to get chances in the Danish national team.

It is one of the things I hope we can bring in when we meet teams that are perhaps at the level below Spain - that we create a lot more," he added.

Riemer has admitted his excitement at working with Hojlund but it just didn't quite work out for him against Spain.

Riemer's comments come with the Danish media echoing his sentiments about a lack of opportunities for Hojlund against Spain.

"A lot of hard work, very few touches of the ball and his only finish on goal was in an offside position.

It is not working optimally with Hojlund right now, but he is constantly contributing to the team," said DR Nyheder.

"Well, he fights and fights and takes so much trouble.

But it's been a long time since he looked dangerous in the national team.

The safe starting place, which has belonged to Hojlund for a year and a half, must really be in danger," added TV2.

"It radiates from him how much he wants to succeed.

And that's why it hurts to see how rarely Hojlund succeeds in the national team, where he hasn't scored in over a year.

He won his duels, but too often the next action or the first pass was imprecise.

We miss him becoming really dangerous," said BT.

It's clear that the Danish press value Hojlund's work rate but want to see him in the goals again - something both Riemer and Amorim will want for the future.

Hojlund will return to Manchester in a few days but will be hoping to end his Danish drought against Serbia on Monday night.
