Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has been praised after helping Sweden beat Estonia 2-0 on Sunday night.

The final international break of 2023 is coming towards its end with United players featuring across the world.

Supporters will already be thinking about the Premier League clash with Everton next weekend though with United taking full priority.

Erik ten Hag will just want his players to come back to Manchester unscathed; if they return in decent form, then that is even better.

In the case of Victor Lindelof, it sounds like he will be coming back in a positive manner.

Sunday's game against Estonia brought down the curtain on a disappointing qualifying campaign for Sweden, who saw Belgium and Austria progress from their group.

This was an emotional night in Solna though as boss Janne Andersson took charge for the final time before moving on.

Veteran midfielder Albin Ekdal also played his final game for Sweden, retiring on the international stage at 34 with 70 caps to his name.

United defender Lindelof graciously handed over the captaincy to Ekdal for his final Sweden game, which was certainly a nice touch.

Aftonbladet praised Lindelof, suggesting that he 'still acted like a captain' with his performance despite handing the armband to Ekdal, helping Sweden avoid another disaster just days after a 3-0 defeat to Azerbaijan.

"Had given up the captain's armband to Albin Ekdal but still acted like a captain. Went hard in a few melees early on to make sure there was no repeat of the misery in Baku," they wrote.

Fotbollskanalen felt that Lindelof was 'very stable' defensively outside of one sloppy pass, contributing to a Swedish clean sheet.

"Was sloppy with a pass but was otherwise very stable and the centre-back tried to contribute as usual in the attack," they wrote.

Svenska Fans added that Lindelof played like a 'general' at the back for Sweden and made others around him much calmer against Estonia.

"Showed why he is a general in defence. Radiated a calm around him," they noted.

The 29-year-old has now started eight Premier League games and two Champions League games this season, becoming one of Ten Hag's most-trusted defenders.

Lindelof has been at the club for over six years now and maybe hasn't quite developed into the defender many expected after his potential at Benfica.

The Swede is playing plenty of games though and that suggests that United and Ten Hag will activate a one-year option in his contract.

Lindelof is clearly appreciated by the Swedish media and we would expect to see him playing an important role for United moving forward this season - especially with Raphael Varane out of favour and Lisandro Martinez injured.
