Alongside Lisandro Martinez, Varane formed a promising central defensive partnership that helped United win the Carabao Cup, reach the FA Cup final and qualify for the Champions League.

Both of United's first choice centre halves have been impacted by injuries this term, but Varane had expected to regain his place in the team up returning to full fitness.

The former Real Madrid star has been conspicuous by his absence in recent weeks, however, with Ten Hag preferring the previously out of favour Harry Maguire and veteran Jonny Evans.

Reports over the international break suggested Ten Hag had fallen out with Varane and the Dutchman addressed those rumours at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's game against Everton.

'I don't know what you're talking about,' said the Dutchman. 'There is internal competition, when you have to decide on two players who are brilliant.

'Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, you have to make a decision.'

According to the The Sun, however, Varane has been taken aback by his demotion and didn't see it coming.

Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old who United are said to value at PS25million.

Varane, however, is determined to stay, at least until the end of the season, and fight for his place before considering his future in the summer.
