Tonali saga latest Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali has hit the headlines this week after being caught up in an investigation into alleged illegal betting. The Italian midfielder was questioned by authorities on Thursday afternoon, along with Aston Villa midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.

Since then, the duo have been released from international action and will return to their respective clubs in the coming days. Tonali was set to take part in clashes against Malta and England before it was decided he should return to Tyneside.

It has not yet been confirmed what Tonali's role is in the saga. Here is everything we know so far 48 hours since the news broke.

Howe's dressing room blast Jamaal Lascelles has revealed that Eddie Howe unleashed his tough side at half-time during Newcastle United's 2-2 draw at West Ham last weekend.

Lascelles said that the friendly face that fans usually see in front of the cameras was not on show as Newcastle trailed 1-0 at the break and had not managed a shot on target at the London Stadium. In an insightful interview, Lascelles also talked fans through the working dynamics of Howe behind the scenes and his assistant Jason Tindall.

Lascelles admitted his own start to the game at West Ham wasn't good enough and Howe had to remind players about their high standards during the interval.

Trippier's moment overshadowed Newcastle United captain Kieran Trippier was handed the England armband on Friday evening but the moment was overshadowed by boos aimed at the man he was replacing, Jordan Henderson.

The former Liverpool midfielder was withdrawn in the 62nd minute and passed Trippier the captaincy as he made his way off the field. England fans made their feelings clear about Henderson as he made his way off the field, booing the 33-year-old as he exited.

The former Sunderland star's move to Saudi Arabia has not gone down well in recent months after his previous work helping the LGBTQ+ community. Homosexuality is illegal in the country and even punishable by death.

Keane's Shearer respect Roy Keane has namechecked Alan Shearer as one of the Premier League's all-time greats despite their ongoing 'beef' which has continued from their playing days. The pair famously clashed in Newcastle United's victory at St James' Park in September 2001, where the Red Devils captain lost his temper and was sent off.

Shearer went on to reveal following his retirement that Keane waited for him in the tunnel following the full-time whistle, although players on both sides prevented a further bust-up. Keane admitted last year in an appearance on the Overlap Live that the pair, who both now work as pundits, still do not see eye to eye.

However, the Manchester United legend's begrudging respect for Shearer was clear in a discussion on Eden Hazard's legacy. The Chelsea favourite announced his retirement this month at the age of 32, following a torrid spell with Real Madrid.

Academy chances Eddie Howe has hinted at more "opportunities" for his Newcastle United youngsters in the weeks to come - and made it clear he trusts some of his Academy stars to shine on the Champions League stage.

Howe named 17-year-old youngster Lewis Miley on the bench against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League Group F win earlier this month. And the likes of Sean Longstaff and Elliot Anderson have made their bow in Europe's premier competition.

The Newcastle head coach feels that he has demonstrated to up and coming academy players that there will be chances to impress him this season.
