Alan Shearer has named the former Newcastle United player who 'petrified' people.

Newcastle United have staged a number of talented players over the years, particularly during the beloved Kevin Keegan era.

Shearer was the poster boy of the infamous 'The Entertainers' side that took the Premier League by storm during the 1990s.

Keegan's men ran Manchester United close for the league title but ultimately finished as runners-up, which still stands as a brilliant achievement.

Following that golden period, Ruud Gullit became manager for a brief spell which didn't quite work out, and neither did one of his PS9.1m signings, who Shearer thought was 'unbelievable'.

"He was an unbelievable player and a great lad to have in the dressing room and you could see, you know standing in the tunnel, that some defenders were absolutely petrified of him," the 53-year-old said.

"They were scared to even look at him at times such was the aura around him and his personality."

Shearer added why he thought it didn't work out on Tyneside for the forward: "But he was honestly a great lad and is a great lad and a brilliant player just injuries.

"He had too many injuries, he was quick, very good touch technically. I mean he was unbelievable in the air when crosses were coming into the box.

"Yeah and he had the fear factor that so many defenders were scared of him."

What Duncan Ferguson is up to now The towering centre-forward retired in 2006 and has since taken up a career in the dugout.

Ferguson had a long spell as a coach at Everton and became caretaker manager on two occasions before departing for Forest Green Rovers last year.

A brief 18-game spell ensued before being sacked by the club after they refused to appoint him an assistant manager that he requested.

He is currently the manager of Scottish Championship side Inverness CT, having joined in September 2023, and his side currently reside second from bottom with a crunch clash against fifth-placed Greenock Morton to come this weekend.
