Premier League duo Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United have agreed deals to sign highly rated youngsters Xander Grieves and CJ Afumuzor from Championship side Portsmouth, according to The News (Portsmouth).

Portsmouth have agreed to sell two of their academy stars to the Premier League this summer, with goalkeeper Xander Grieves set to join Wolverhampton Wanderers at the age of just 14 years old and midfielder CJ Afumuzor who is set to join Newcastle United.

Both are still in contract so the Premier League side will be expected to pay a fee to secure their services, however the amount they can receive is somewhat limited due to the Elite Player Performance Plan which was implemented in 2011. The idea of the scheme was to increase the quality of home-grown players and improve the pathway for development of talented youngsters.

A New Start For Portsmouth Portsmouth are looking to stabilise after an extended period in the third tier. They will be buoyed by Ipswich Town's impressive back-to-back promotions and will feel like they will have what it takes to compete at Championship level. That being said there will be an adjustment period. It is a new league for Mousinho who has impressed so far, and it remains to be seen if he can continue his style of football and still get results when faced with stronger opposition dropping from the Premier League.

Money is also a significant factor, many club are willing to spend above and beyond what they can afford to give themselves even the smallest advantage in the race for the Premier League riches. Portsmouth are a big club, but will need to spend wisely whilst ensuring the core of the team that got them to this point is kept together as well as it possibly can be. However, Pompey showed just how good they can be last year, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see them continue their upwards trajectory.
