Kieran Trippier shows true colours as Newcastle star leads celebrations after Liverpool man snub
Source: Chronicle Live:

When Trent Alexander-Arnold fired home the penalty to secure England's passage through to the semi-finals of EURO 2024, it was telling that Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier was one of the first players to celebrate with the Liverpool star.

Trippier started for the fifth game in a row at this summer's European Championships, but with Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate reverting to playing with three centre-halves and two wing-backs, the Magpies vice-captain was under fire.

Many fans, pundits and journalists called for Alexander-Arnold to start in place of Trippier ahead of Saturday's quarter-final clash with Switzerland at the Merkur-Spiel Arena in Dusseldorf.

Southgate resisted those calls and stuck with Trippier, but there was no sense of positional rivalry on show as the Newcastle star led the England players in congratulating Alexander-Arnold, who came on as a substitute during extra-time, after he scored the winning penalty in the penalty shootout.

For the second game in a row, England had to come from behind. Breel Embolo fired Switzerland in front in the 75th minute, only for Arsenal's Bukayo Saka to hit back five minutes later with a stunning left-footed effort from outside of the penalty area.

It means England move on to Wednesday's semi-final against the Netherlands in Dortmund and Trippier, as well as Newcastle United team-mate Anthony Gordon, are now just two wins away from being crowned European champions.
