£100m striker dream is dead for Chelsea as their top target moves closer to new contract
Source:Chelsea News

Chelsea's interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is still alive - but very much on life support after reports from Football Insider that the Swedish striker is set to sign a new contract at Newcastle.

The Blues had looked to take advantage of the 24 year old's low wage existing deal, plus his club's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues to try and prise him away from the Magpies. Pete O'Rourke claims we made a cash plus players offer at the end of June, but that Isak has decided to stay put and sign a new deal.

After managing 25 goals even in an injury affected season, it's obvious why top clubs have been circling as Newcastle struggle to get within the rules financially.

Alexander Isak celebrates a goal. Chelsea's elite striker dreams come to an end Sadly this looks like the end of the road for Chelsea's transfer interest, which never looked to really get into gear.

We're sure the sporting directors have a long list of strikers at a variety of price points, and we're sure that Isak is near the top of that list. If things had all fallen into place, it's not impossible they would have stretched to sign him, even at the PS100m valuation which was floating around.

It would have taken some serious financial engineering, and likely some very fortuitous sales from our squad to raise the funds. But we're a long way from it now, and if this new deal is signed, we can rule it out entirely.

We've noticed a shift in the striker policy already, with even the pursuit of mid range options like Jhon Duran seeming to go a little cold. At this rate, the policy looks to be securing a cheap backup for Jackson and seeing if any great opportunities open up in the future.
