Anthony Gordon issues 37-word Newcastle United message after Everton penalty miss
Source:Latest News

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has refused to hide from his penalty miss against former club Everton.

The Magpies were awarded a spot-kick in the 35th minute when James Tarkowski was penalised for dragging down Sandro Tonali in the box. It came after VAR intervened and advised referee Craig Pawson to review the incident at the pitchside monitor.

Fresh from scoring his penalty in the 1-1 draw against Manchester City last Saturday, Gordon stepped up in front of the Howard Kendall Gwladys Street End, only to see his attempt saved by England teammate Jordan Pickford.

Gordon and his Newcastle teammates had other opportunities to score but couldn't find the breakthrough and therefore had to settle with a point.

Taking to social media after the match, Gordon wrote: "A great performance, just couldn't put them away, and that's on me. Never easy missing but you'll never ever see me shy away from stepping up for my team.

"Thanks to everyone that travelled - till next time "

Gordon was praised for his reaction to the penalty miss by head coach Eddie Howe.

"I thought he handled the disappointment really well because I know from personal experience, not in terms of missing penalties, but making a mistake or a moment goes against you, it can play on your mind because you know you're not going to be able to replay it so it can affect you negatively but I don't think it did today," Howe said.

"He's been an outstanding penalty taker, I've seen him work on it every day in training so I've got no issues with him taking it or taking another one in the future. We really do back him and I think he did really well today."

Gordon will now link up with England - and Pickford - for Nations League matches against Greece and Finland. Newcastle are back in action on October 19 when they welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to St James' Park.
