Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin hits out as ex-Newcastle transfer target makes 'softer' claim
Source:Chronicle Live:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has claimed he has seen 'softer' penalties given after the 'frustrated' Everton star was denied a spot-kick against Newcastle United.

Calvert-Lewin appealed for a penalty midway through the second half after Dan Burn got across and the pair fell to the turf inside the box. There was clear contact, but VAR confirmed that Calvert-Lewin had kicked the back of Burn's leg as he pulled the trigger and no foul was given.

Everton boss Sean Dyche nonetheless thought it was a penalty because 'you can't do that in the box' while Burn was the first to admit that he was 'a little bit' worried because if referee Craig Pawson had given the spot-kick, it 'probably doesn't get overturned' by VAR. Calvert-Lewin, for his part, felt he was 'obstructed'.

"I think the replay speaks for itself," the former Newcastle target told the BBC following the goalless draw at Goodison Park. "I'm frustrated and disappointed not to get the penalty.

"It was a good save from the goalie. I was about to put it in the back of the net and I was obstructed.

"Usually, I've seen them given. I've seen softer ones given and it is what it is. It would have been a great win. A great performance and a win would have topped it off. It's a point, a hard-earned point."

Eddie Howe, in contrast, suggested Burn 'stood his ground' and, although the Newcastle boss did not see a replay of the incident, he added that 'naturally I'd side our way'.
