Anthony Gordon's first half penalty was saved as Everton draw 0-0 with Newcastle United
Harvey Barnes has revealed what Anthony Gordon was told in the Newcastle United dressing room following his penalty miss against Everton. Gordon was booed throughout the goalless draw at Goodison Park following his acrimonious departure in January 2023 and missed a golden opportunity to give Eddie Howe's side the lead.
Newcastle were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark following a VAR review after James Tarkowski hauled Sandro Tonali to the ground from a corner. However, Gordon's effort was saved by Jordan Pickford. But when asked what Gordon was told during the break, Barnes revealed the message was a simple one.
"It was just about going again," he said. "Clear your mind and get on with the game. He was just going out there for the second half, and us as a team, to win the game.
"He's been back a few times, as you said. He knows the reaction he's going to get, and he's dealt with that before. And he did it again today."
Reflecting on the draw, Barnes believes his side lacked a cutting edge, saying: "We wanted to get more out of the game. It was a tough game, but we controlled it in different spells, but we just couldn't get that goal.
"Last year we had a lot of games when we were scoring a lot of goals, which is great, but our aim every game is to win, whether that's by one goal or five.
"It's the points that matter. Of course we would like to be scoring four or five goals every week, but it's not feasible.
"We know when we get opportunities we need to take them. For sure, being clinical is part of that, and to win games, you need to be clinical.
"The top teams do it; they're so efficient in the final third, and it is something we will keep working on and keep trying to bridge that gap."
