Newcastle United will require clearance from Chelsea to play Lewis Hall in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. EFL rules state that Hall is technically ineligible to face the Magpies unless Mauricio Pochettino gives permission.

The teenager joined the Magpies from Chelsea on an initial season-long loan deal in the summer, with Newcastle having an obligation to buy him on a permanent basis next summer.

Hall was outstanding against Manchester United on Wednesday evening and grabbed an important second goal when cracking home at the Stretford End in the 3-0 win in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

EFL rules state: "Players registered on a temporary basis will not be eligible to play unless the club holding his full registration gives its written consent (also subject to any restrictions on the number of loan players prescribed by applicable Premier League Rules or League Regulations)."

Newcastle stated on signing Hall: "United have signed defender Lewis Hall on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea, with an obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer based on performance-related criteria."

The Magpies will hope to have Hall available after he shone on his second start for the club. Speaking prior to his start at Old Trafford, Eddie Howe reflected on his start to life on Tyneside.

"He's a talented player. He can play various positions for us, which in our current position we are going to need. Lewis has been training well.

"He's been adapting to quite a big change in his life so for such a young player to move from London and settle in here, I think he's done it well. The best of him is yet to come, without a doubt.

"When you get an opportunity you have to take it, and Lewis has done that. His performance against Manchester City was very good, he's a player we really like."
