'I regret having a go' – Newcastle fan who clashed with Kieran Trippier apologises

The Magpies were beaten 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday evening, and were completely outclassed by the Cherries.

Though Newcastle are suffering from a massive injury crisis, they were expected to beat a Bournemouth side who had, until that point, won just one of their 11 Premier League games under Andoni Iraola.

After the full-time whistle was blown, Trippier was seen walking over to a section of the travelling supporters and appeared to be arguing quite forcefully with one in particular.

A steward was forced to come between the two before Joelinton ran over to drag the England international away, with footage of the incident later emerging on social media.

It revealed part of the argument, with Trippier heard saying: 'So the lads are not giving everything? How many injuries have we got, how many injuries have we got? Hey?'

Now, Newcastle fan Thomas Willoughby has revealed himself as the supporter in question and issued an apology for his actions.

Replying to a post on Facebook from the Newcastle United Supporters' Club, as quoted by the Daily Mail, Willoughby wrote: 'It was me, I travelled all day and was very frustrated with the performance.

'I regret having a go at them because I know what all these players have done for this club.

'Everyone's done stupid things. I hold my hands up and admit I shouldn't have had a go at them that much but was just heat of the moment.'

It seems that Trippier holds no ill will towards Willoughby, with the right-back telling Sky Sports after the game: 'The fans are emotional, of course they are. They have travelled a long way, they spend a lot of money to come and watch us.

'I was just having a chat with one of them, I said we are giving everything. There is no need to panic, we are still in a good position in the league, we are still in the Champions League, Carabao Cup quarter-finals, there is no need to panic.

'We got beat, we do apologise for that result, but the most important thing is that the lads are giving everything. We are giving more under the circumstances.'
