David Wagner may have been caught by surprise by Jon Rowe's stunning start to the Championship season - but the young winger knew he could make an impact for Norwich City.

Rowe netted his seventh goal in 11 matches to continue a blistering start to the campaign that has seen him rewarded with playing time, accolades and international recognition with a call-up to the England U21s.

Considering Rowe hadn't started a senior game for City prior to the opening game of the campaign, his meteoric rise has been the standout story of the Canaries' season to date.

Wagner admitted on Friday that Rowe hadn't been a player on his radar at the start of pre-season, but he has grasped his opportunity and become a key cog in their side.

The 20-year-old backs his ability and hasn't surprised himself with either his level of performance or output.

"I've always been confident in my ability and maybe the headers have been a surprise, but I'm happy I can help the team by scoring different types of goals. I am looking to continue this," Rowe said after netting in their 1-1 draw at Coventry.

"This is not a fluke - this is what I am and what I can offer to the team. This is just football. I love the game. I've worked on it my whole life and football has been my whole life. It's a part of me so I always try to look to do different things that will help me improve.

"Regardless of whether it's on the right, left or at striker, the ultimate aim is to score goals and help the team win.

"I'm trying my best and I'm really pleased that I can score in different ways."

Whilst Rowe is away with the Young Lions, Wagner will be working with the squad to fix the issues that have emerged, leading to a run of just one Championship win in six matches.

That will serve as a major boost as Norwich attempt to work through a tricky period, most recently drawing 1-1 with Coventry on Saturday.

"There are a few people that are injured and need a bit more time to rest up and get back up to their full potential," Rowe admitted.

"There's a couple of players coming back after the break, so it will be good to see them back in the side. Everyone, mainly, is back in training.

"We are getting closer to Josh (Sargent), Ash Barnes coming back. We're counting down the days to have a fit and healthy squad."
